Five Things to Know About Congress’s Fight Over Zika

Review by Ava Gaston
Five things to know about Congress fight over Zika” disscuses the main issue on the Congress fight over Zika and how much money the government is running short of. Congress voted down the proposal of  more funding for Zika treatment. There are two sides of the debate, One side is saying that we should not worry about as the mosquitos season is over in the North, however, in the South, especially Florida, there are still a number of cases. Therefore , we need more funding. But  Congress doesn't have enough votes to better the issues. According to the Florida Department of Health, the number of cases in Florida is 56. In addition to this the CDC says that out of the $222 million given, $194 million had already been used. $35 we million were used in Florida, but unfortunately the money is running out too fast.

This issue affects humanity as a whole as Congress is being careless about how their people they are representing are getting sick and need help. This also shows that we as humans care more about money keeling as supposed to taking care of one another. We should be caring about each other and not about stupid superficial money.people are getting sick and their own country’s government  doesn't work hard for them.

The article was detailed and was written very well. It was clear and easy to read. I could understand it. However it could have provided more specific data or evidence on number of cases nationwide as supposed to only Florida. This would alarm the readers more and really drive the issue more

  1. My classmate Ava did a great job of taking what the article “Five Things to Know About Congress Fight Over Zica” said and explaining why it is important. She explains that Zica is worse in Florida than anywhere else and that's where the funding needs to go. She also does a very good job of explaining why the funding isn't reaching where it needs to. She says that congress has not approved spending more money on Zica in Florida. She also does a good job convincing the reader that Zica is a problem that needs to be solved now. She reports that 56 cases have been reported in Florida so far and there is possible more on the horizon.

` One weakness in her current event is that she did not use quotes from the article to back up her point. Her argument would have been more convincing if she used evidence in the form of quotes. Another criticism I have for her current event is that she only covered people in Florida. I know that other states in the USA have Zica carrying Mosquitoes. It would have been interesting to see what other states are affected.

Overall I thought that she wrote a very informative essay on how Zica is infecting part of America. I thought that Zica is a very important topic and needs to be treated as seriously as Ebola was. I am not going to travel to Florida until this epidemic is contained and sorted out.

  2. I read Ava’s review on the article “Five things to know about Congress fight over Zika." I thought Ava’s review was both informative and very insightful. Since Ava’s topic of how much money the government should spend on Zika is controversial, she does a great job addressing both sides of the argument, and remaining unbiased when doing so, but then, later in her review does a terrific job convincing the reader that Zika is an urgent matter that the government should put a lot of money into. Ava also does a great job laying out the funding process, and explaining how much money needs to go to each place. And lastly, I liked how Ava mentioned reliable sources in her article to help build her case. For instance she wrote “According to the Florida Department of Health, the number of cases in Florida is 56” instead of just writing that their are 56 cases in Florida she backs that number up with a trustworthy source, the Florida Department of Health.

One area Ava could've improved upon was explaining what Zika was and the effects it has on people who carry this disease. She discusses the funding of Zika in detail but doesn’t go into detail discussing the actual virus. Another suggestion is that Ava could've used more quotes from the article, she mentioned good sources, but pulling a few quotes from the article would help to make her review even stronger.

After reading this review I learned how important it is to put a lot of money into Zika research so we can help to prevent more cases and hopefully at some point create a vaccine. There are already 56 cases of Zika in the United States and if we don’t take preventative measures this number can rapidly increase, so it is extremely important to stop Zika before it affects more lives, even if that means putting in millions of dollars to do so.

My classmate Ava Gaston wrote a review on Five Things to Know About Congress’s Fight Over Zika by Emmarie Huetteman of the New York Times. This review got the message across that this issue needs more funding, also the reader can tell that Ava also cares about the health of people who have, or could possible get the Zika virus. The author of this review also explains that though mosquito season is nearly over in the north, that it is still an issue in some southern states such as Florida. Lastly, Ava did an excellent job stating the exact numbers for the amount of money given and spent. “In addition to this the CDC says that out of the $222 million given, $194 million had already been used. $35 we million were used in Florida, but unfortunately the money is running out too fast.”

Though this review has many strengths, there are a couple improvements that could be added. First, Ava could have used direct quotes from the article to better prove her point on why Congress should give more money towards Zika treatment. Also Ava could have explained why it is crucial for Congress to donate money to prove why she decided it is needed. These ideas could better improve this review.

This review on Five Things to Know About Congress’s Fight Over Zika by Emmarie Huetteman of the New York Times was great. It explained why Congress doesn’t want to spend any more money on Zika treatment which I found very surprising. It also explained the writer’s side which was that Congress should donate more. Overall, I believe this was a very important article to read since it is such a controversial topic and the review by Ava Gaston wrote a great review on it.
