Grossman, Lisa. “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago.” Science News, Magazine of the Society for Science & the Public, 1 Nov. 2018, www.sciencenews.org/article/milky-way-feasted-smaller-galaxy-10-billion-years-ago.

In this article, Lisa Grossman describes the research that was recently conducted as to the Milky Way’s inhabitants. It was concluded that the Milky way, during its younger days, devoured a smaller galaxy. Two research centers were used in order to conduct this study, one in space and one on Earth. Amina Helmi of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands analyzed the speeds and positions of tens of thousands of stars in the Milky Way within about 33,000 light-years of the sun, using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope. This is a space observatory of the European Space Agency designed for astrometry. Based on this data, it was calculated that a group of about 30,000 stars seemed to be moving in the opposite direction, instead of rotating around the galactic center with the sun and the rest of the stars in the Milky Way. This was continued at the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, or APOGEE, which was conducted in an astronomical observatory in New Mexico. It used the spectrum of light that stars emit to infer their chemistry and ages. The stars that had been previously measured by the Gaia telescope were further inspected, and it was observed that the backward-moving stars had fewer heavy elements than stars like the sun. “It was just so clean. You immediately knew these stars really formed elsewhere.” Helmi notes. The final conclusion of the research was that this collision occurred ten billion years ago and explains why the Milky Way is currently split into different components. The galaxy was later given the name of Gaia-Enceladus, after a Greek Myth describing a giant buried under a large mountain in Italy.

Lisa Grossman provides very useful insight into the galaxy that our earth inhabits. The study conducted serves as a foundation of new knowledge in terms of the Milky Way. There is so much that surrounds our Earth that we have yet to discover, and this advancement broadens our spectrum of how we understand the universe. This might cause humanity to invest more into space exploration, as we now know that our galaxy contains so much more than we originally intended. While we have only recently discovered that these two galaxies once merged, it gives ordinary people much more of an idea based upon the possibilities of our universe and reasons as to why we should continue to explore it. This also might give us insight as to additional galaxies that are elsewhere in the universe. I think that it is important that we have the ability to be aware of our surroundings, not just speaking in terms of the environment but the galaxy that surrounds us.

In general, I think the author did a very good job of providing the right amount of information to get the point across to the reader. Grossman provided multiple quotes from the experiment itself that makes it less difficult and very clear for the reader to understand. Her writing is very sophisticated, as this topic is not an easy one to explain while making the article very interesting. However, I feel as if there are a few areas in which Grossman can improve upon. When reading about the Gaia space telescope and the Apache Point astronomical observatory, I was confused as to what each of them meant while she did not provide direct background information. In order to obtain the correct definition of each of these, I had to do further research. I feel like if this information was included, it would make it easier for the reader to understand. Although Grossman generally did a good job of explaining certain terms, both of these were crucial to the experiment and it would really enhance her writing if such background information was included. Also, the general organization of the article was not as refined, and sometimes when mentioning a new topic the author seemed to discuss another topic in the next paragraph about something discussed prior in the article. This could be fixed simply by switching the order of some of this information or making it more concise. Overall, this article was extremely interesting to review and I hope to see where this new research takes route in further studies.

  1. Isabella, when reading your article I noticed many things that you did well. First off, you started your article review with its main idea. “It was concluded that the Milky way, during its younger days, devoured a smaller galaxy.” You also added a lot of information that helped flesh out your article. This included your addition of the range measured, “within about 33,000 light-years of the sun,” and the number of facilities used, “Two research centers were used in order to conduct this study, one in space and one on Earth.” Finally your addition of critiques for the article really helped the reader find your stance on the review, “when mentioning a new topic the author seemed to discuss another topic in the next paragraph about something discussed prior in the article.” Over all your article review was very interesting and well writen.
Although you article review was done very well there were still some things that you could do better. One suggestion I have would be to trim down certain sentences that appear to be running long. I am only saying this after reading your sentence, “Also, the general organization of the article was not as refined, and sometimes when mentioning a new topic the author seemed to discuss another topic in the next paragraph about something discussed prior in the article.” This sentence was a run on and could have been fixed by making it two separate sentences. One more suggestion for you would be to check for errors in the flow of your sentences. This error was found in the sentence, “Her writing is very sophisticated, as this topic is not an easy one to explain while making the article very interesting.” You should change this sentence to, “despite her writing being very sophisticated the author manages to keep her readers interested. If you added these suggestions your article would have been perfect.
When reading your review, I have to say that I was very interested. I had not idea that two galaxies could collide without damaging them. Let alone that our own galaxy collide with another. After learning this I have to say that I am a lot more interested in what happens in our universe. With this information, others that have been similarly interested may do more groundbreaking research on this topic. With this research, people as a whole will no more about our universe and its origins.

For current event #8, I read Isabella’s review on the article “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago” by Lisa Grossman which talks about the Milky Way previously consuming a smaller galaxy. Isabella includes many details and so much information, which provides readers with an abundance of information that makes the article and her review easy to understand. It also shows that she spent a lot of time writing her review, and that she is passionate about the subject of the article. She also writes with advanced diction, which makes her writing more advanced and sophisticated, and therefore makes it so much more impactful. Isabella also makes sure to provide examples of the positive parts of author Lisa Grossman’s writing before stating areas in need of improvement, which is helpful because they provide balance for her criticisms.

Isabella is a strong writer, and therefore has only a couple areas in which she could improve. For example, Isabella should have included the article title in her review. Although it is mentioned in the citation, it is still necessary to mention it in her writing, because it’s the topic of her entire review. Although Isabella’s word choices are refined, she could have improved upon this even more by eliminating words such as “I think.” These words make her writing less stable and more open to argument, and more of a belief rather than a fact. However, these are only minor criticisms that do not take away from the fact that Isabella is an excellent writer.

I chose to write about Isabella’s review because I hoped to learn more about the astronomy part of science. I thought that it would make me more knowledgeable about the subject, which it did. The fact that the Milky Way consumed an entirely different galaxy is extremely important and provokes many questions as to why this happened, and what will happen next. It also provides new ideas and theories about our galaxy, and will probably lead to new discoveries and advancements in the scientific field. This is an important historic event that greatly impacts astronomy and previous knowledge about the universe. Overall, Isabella's review of this article is sophisticated and strong, and I hope to read more of hers this semester.

Grossman, Lisa. “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago.” Science News, Magazine of the Society for Science & the Public, 1 Nov. 2018, www.sciencenews.org/article/milky-way-feasted-smaller-galaxy-10-billion-years-ago.

Isabella Bouvard was able to explain the purpose of the article really well and allowed me to gain a good understanding of what was happening in the article before I read it. I chose this because it is important to include, otherwise your review will confuse people that may not know what is happening because they may have not read the article. She is very good at pointing out the importance and relevance of this article. An example of this would be “Lisa Grossman provides very useful insight into the galaxy that our earth inhabits. The study conducted serves as a foundation of new knowledge in terms of the Milky Way.” I chose this because it is important to strongly state how important something is because without having the importance the article is weak and the review and article have no purpose. Isabella also applies good grammar to her review. This is important because it strengthens the review and makes it more credible.

Isabella could add more quotes from the article or reference the article more because without this the review can seem less credible. This can be corrected by adding more quotes from the article that relate to something in the review. In her review she begins talking about the author in the second paragraph, but then completely side tracks to talking about the importance. This weakens the review because the reader will become less interested and may stop reading the review. This could be fixed by replacing the environment talk in the second paragraph with talk about the author.

It is very fascinating how a galaxy can somehow consume another galaxy. It especially seems amazing when you think about the sizes of this. I chose this because it baffles me how this could happen and how this could affect our solar system. This changes the way I see our galaxy and how there could be other galaxies that we have eaten or that maybe one day we will get eaten by a larger galaxy.

For this week's current event, I read Isabelle Bouvard’s interpretations of, “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago,” By Lisa Grossman. This article was all about how the Milky Way consuming a smaller galaxy. Overall, Isabella did a great job summarizing all the information she got from her article. She included many details and had information on each point provided in the article. Secondly, her detailed response showed that she spent a lot of time reading over her article and was able to correctly review the article. Finally, she provided multiple examples in order to make her claim on her article stronger.

In my opinion, Isabella is very skilled at doing her reviews. However, I noticed two main mistakes. First, i noticed that she tended to use “I think” a lot in her review. She could improve on this my using strong dictation to prove her claim. Secondly, she failed to mention the name of her article anywhere in her review. This was just a small mistake that could’ve been fixed by simply reading over the review after she finished writing it. However, in the end I had trouble finding big mistakes in her writing.

Overall, I have enjoyed reading Isabella’s reviews in the past and was again pleased with this review. Just from looking at the title of the article, I was extremely intrigued as to the fact that the Milky Way was able to eat on a smaller galaxy. Overall, Isabella is a great writer and I hope to read more of her reviews in the future.

For my Current Event 11, I chose to read Isabella Bouvard’s review of the article, “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago” by Lisa Grossman. The article explains how the Milky Way consumed a smaller galaxy in the past. Isabella used very advanced language and sentence structure, which makes her writing much more sophisticated, making it that much more strong and impactful. She also provides many examples of the strengths in Lisa Grossman’s writing before suggesting areas that could improved upon. Finally, Isabella includes a large amount of details, makes the article and her review extremely easy for readers to understand. This also shows that she put a lot of time and effort into her review, and that she actually cares about the topic.
For the most part, this review was very well written, but there were a few minor things that could be improved upon. First, I thought that Isabella should have included a bit more background information. I would have understood the article a lot better if there was more background information about the the Milky Way and the galaxy that it consumed, because while there was a lot of information on what actually happened, there was not much background information. Next, I feel that the review would be a lot stronger if there was research written in the actual study that the article is about in the review. If there were quotes from the study I would be able to better understand what was learned from the research.
I chose to read this review because it is extremely fascinating to me how a galaxy can consume another galaxy and how it affects the rest of the solar system. It makes me think a lot about the interactions that occur in space and how drastic changes like this, while they seem unlikely, can occur. Reading this review really changed the way I see the galaxy and made me wonder what other galaxies have been consumed or if the Milky Way could possibly be consumed one day.

This week, I read the article review that Isabella Bouvard, “The Milky Way Feasted on a Smaller Galaxy 10 Billion Years Ago,” by Lisa Grossman. This article describes the Milky Way and its inhabitants and how it is consuming a smaller galaxy. It also depicted how the two different research centers that created this study were located in space and on earth. Isabella stated the information about how Amina Helmi of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands analyzed the speeds and positions of tens of thousands of stars in the Milky Way within about 33,000 light-years of the sun and how she used data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope. I chose this article review because my knowledge about the Milky Way is not very wide so i was interested in learning more about his specific topic.
In general, my opinion about her review is that it is very well written but there are very few mistakes. First of all, I think that when Isabella is describing her opinion on the topic, she didn't get into much depth about her specific view, she just strictly spoke about facts. Bringing more self perspective brings more outlook about her writing and the topic specifically. She also could have included more quotes because it gives the topic more information and leads the viewer to more conclusions and being more interested in the topic overall.
I read isabella's review because I was hoping to learn more about our galaxy and the science behind it and the research that is put in by many scientists. It is very fascinating learning that the Milky Way has consumed a galaxy and that information leads me to many questions and the want to learn more because of the many questions I have formed from reading this. This is an important topic to research because of the education it brings to many about our galaxy. I very much enjoyed reading this and I hope to learn more.
