Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake

Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake." LiveScience.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Nov. 2012. http://www.livescience.com/25032-ancient-antarctic-microbes-found.html

In the article “Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake” we learn that researchers have now discovered a new type of bacteria under the icy surface of an Antarctic lake that has been living there for a millennium. This is very interesting because there is a lack of light and oxygen in this lake. Because of this, scientists may believe that live may be able to live on other planets. The ice on this lake is so thick that nothing can get through it naturally. To examine the water, scientists had to use drills and heated pipes. Even with the surface covered in ice, the water temperature is 7 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists are amazed that something can live under these harsh conditions. Scientists say that the microbes may have been able to live because of chemical reactions in the water.
This article is very important to today’s society. Because the bacteria can live under these conditions, scientists believe that they may be able to live in “alien” worlds. This is a big step because now other researchers are drilling other lakes to see what else they might have missed. This is a big step because by seeing the boundaries of life on earth, scientists will be able to then know what to look for and where.
Although this article was written well, there are a few things he could do to make it better. First, he could have given other examples of where they may be doing this to find other living things. Also, he could have given opinions on this topic from multiple scientists. He could have given some examples of where these microbes could live. Lastly, he should say if this is the first time that this has happened.

  1. Ralph made a very nice review of the article “Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake”. He did a good job of making a summary that summed up the most important contents of the article into a nice, small paragraph. I also thought the way he related the article to our lives today and to science in general was very interesting. Another thing that Ralph did well in his review is that he made a good critique of the original article, and made many of the same suggestions that I thought of when reading the article.
Although Ralph’s review was very good, there were a couple of things that I would have done differently when making the review. First, I would not have repeated many phrases as Ralph did in the review, an example being his repetition of “This is a big step because…”. I would also have said that the icy Antarctic lake is similar to icy climates on some other planets, and could therefore show how there could conceivably be “alien” life.
There were also many interesting things that I found out from reading Ralph’s review of this article and the article itself. I never knew that there was life in such extreme climates as the bottom of an iced-over and extremely salty lake with no oxygen, and I am still impressed that the life can sustain itself there.

  2. My classmate, Ralph Chrappa, wrote a great review on the article "Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake." One aspect of Ralph's review that was especially good was his connections. For example, Ralph said that this discover could help scientists in their discovery of life on another planet. Also, Ralph did a good job of explaining the process of how the scientists found the organism, such as Ralph included that they used drills and hot pipes to get through the ice. In addition, Ralph's critique of the article was very good. He brought up very interesting questions about the discovery and the article.
Although Ralph's article was very well done, a few minor changes could make his review even better next time. For instance, Ralph could have provided a quote from the article so the reader could get a feel for how the article was written. Also, Ralph could have gone farther with he connection of life on other planet because Ralph only talked briefly about the subject, even though it was a great connection.
From Ralph's review, I learned a lot of new, interesting things. Reading his review made me realize that their is still a lot of the world and other planets that we don't know about. Ralph's connection of life on another planet made me think about scientists are getting close to discovering if their is another planet that humans could live on.

  3. I read Ralph’s article review “Ancient Microbes Found in Buried Antarctic Lake”. Ralph did a fantastic job giving strong examples from the article. For instance, the fact that scientists had to use drills and, heated pipes in order to examine the ice. Also, I liked how Ralph included words from the article, and his choice of words and description made her article very easy to understand.
I believe that Ralph’s review could have been improved, if he incorporated a little more summary about how the scientists came upon discovering life in the lake. I also really enjoyed how he incorporated his opinions into the review because I was able to relate them to my own.
One aspect that impressed me in this article was how the scientists were able to discover this life under this chunk of impenetrable ice. This article was very interesting to me because I find it amazing how something could live and breath in that lake for years and years. Overall, I think Ralph did a fantastic job on this review and it really opened my eyes to see how technology has affected our world and enabled us to learn more about life.
