Mars Rover Discovery Revealed

“Mars Rover Discovery Revealed” NY Science Time.  Web. 4 Dec. 2012

In the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed,” Kenneth Chang reveals the discovery and evidence of a recent rover sent to the planet Mars.  Using a close-up high definition camera, Dr. John P. Grotzinger has concluded that the soil is much dryer looking than the soil on Earth.  Dr. Grotzinger reports that the grain size of the soil is similar to artificial sweeteners, but is covered by dirt with a texture similar to salt. Dr. Grotzinger heated the dirt to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit, in order to observe the gases that left escaped the dirt.  The most prominent gases that escaped were water vapor and carbon dioxide.  But more importantly, a simple compound named chlorinated methane was found.  Chlorinated methane is placed in the category of organics, which are the building blocks of life.  Dr. Grotzinger is hesitant to declare that the soil definitely contains organics because it is possible that the organics could have been generated by chemical reactions as the dirt was heated.
As Dr. Grotzinger states, “This is just the beginning . . . our real science mission is still to come.”  Dr. Grotzinger is still trying to figure out what some of data means.  For example, he is unsure “whether the carbon discovery could point to anything biological on mars.”  Nonetheless, Dr. Grotzinger’s discoveries make some interesting discoveries.  For instance, the discovery of organics could further lead to the discovery of life on Mars.  To enhance their research, the scientist plan to make more discovery in the field of organics.  He hopes to gather information on sedimentary rocks.  Dr. Grotzinger’s discovery could serve as the foundation for many more discoveries to come.  As for now, the information is very inconclusive and very vague.
Kenneth Chang did a decent job on writing this review.  I realize that this is a very new discovery, but Chang did not include many statistics and descriptive information.  Furthermore, he didn’t include how this discovery has any impact.  However, Kenneth Chang revealed many important information and he made it clear that this discovery could lead to many more discoveries to come.

  1. I read my classmates Chris’s response to the article, “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed.” It was a very interesting article to read and very knowledgeable. One thing Chris did well was citing the doctors who made researches and studys on the mars rover. Another thing Chris did well was explaining key words as well as explaining the article when it was hard to understand. A third thing Chris did well was quoting the scientists so that we knew the information was true and there was proof behind it.
Two ways Chris could have made his article better was giving the article his opinion more because it was very fact based. Another thing Chris could have done better was put more information in it, but overall it was a great article to read.
One thing that impressed me was the fact that we found organics, the building blocks to life, on mars. It was very cool to learn about this and I have furthered my knowledge from reading this article.

  2. My classmate Chris Gay wrote a review on the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed.” Chris did a great job, and I enjoyed his review very much. One thing I liked about the review was how Chris was able to give a quick and concise summary that allowed for readers to understand what the article was about. Another thing I like about the review was how Chris included quotes from the real article; this allowed readers to get an even better understanding of the article. The final thing I really enjoyed about the article was how Chris showed that he had knowledge about the topic and that he took an interest in it. Even though the review was great I did think there were a couple of things Chris could have improved on. One was I thought Chris could have given more of his own opinion, and makes the review more of his own. The last thing I thought that I thought Chris could have done better was making the summary easier to understand. One thing that found really interesting about the article was how we are able to find information from the technology we have created, I think it is create the usage we get out of our technology. All and all I thought the review was great, and I learned a lot, and enjoyed it.

  3. I read my classmate Chris’s review on the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed”. It is a well-informed response and very knowledgeable. Chris did a great job on using quotes from Dr. Grotzinger. He showed the reader how Dr. Grotzinger thought about the discoveries, which made the article more professional and made the reader look at it in a more scientific perspective. Chris also included specific number and the name of the substance in his review, for example, 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit and chlorinated methane. I found that made a lot of sense and it gave me a deep impression. Chris also did a great job on criticizing the review. I felt the impact of the discovery could be more explained, too.
Although it is a very good response, I have few suggestions about it. First, as Chris said “the discovery of organics could further lead to the discovery of life on Mars”, it would be better to state how the discovery of carbon and heavy hydrogen relates to finding life on Mars. Chris could also add his thoughts about the impact of the discoveries. Although the original writer Kenneth Chang didn’t, Chris could make the review more interesting if he did.
Overall, this review is very impressive and it furthered my knowledge on the discovering of organics and life outside earth.

  4. My classmate Chris Gay did a reflection on the article, “ Mars Rover Discovery Revealed”. This article talked about the interesting new discovery that a rover found on mars. It found dirt that was much drier than Earth’s Dirt. Its texture was a lot like salt. Dr. Grotzinger, the scientist that discovered this, decided to heat the dirt to see what kind of gases escaped from it. He found methane which is a organic chemical and one of the building blocks to life. Chris did a very good job on this reflection. One thing that he did particularly well was choose and interesting topic. His topic was interesting and made me want to read it. When I first glanced at the blog and saw the title Mars Rover Discovery Revealed, I thought of life, or aliens. Even though it wasn’t the case, the title still caught my attention. Another thing that Chris did well was explain the discovery itself. He explained all the characteristics of the dirt and why it was important. One final thing that Chris did well was keep balance in his paragraphs. About all of the lengths were equal which made for a better read.
Even though Chris did a great job on this assignment, there were still things that he could improve. One thing that he could have done was talk about how the dirt was found and where on mars it was found. If he had done this then it would allow us to understand the procedure a little better. Another thing that Chris could have changed was his sources. His only source was his article. If he had found another place or source that had the same topic or idea, then the discovery would be easier to believe and ultimately more reliable. Regardless of few minor mistakes, Chris did a fantastic job on his reflection.
One thing that I learned from Chris’ article was that there is still a possibility for life on mars. I think that this is really cool because Mars is such an unknown place to me. Overall, Chris’ reflection was very good, and I really enjoyed reading it.

  5. I read Chris’s article review “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed”. Chris did a fantastic job giving strong examples from the article. For instance, the fact that scientists can use a close-up high definition camera to examine the terrain of Mars, and notice that the soil is much dryer looking than the soil on Earth. Also, I liked how Chris included words from the article, and his choice of words and description made her article very easy to understand.
I believe that Chris’s review could have been improved, if he incorporated a little more summary about how the scientists came upon discovering how to magnify Mars on such a high scale. I also really enjoyed how he incorporated his opinions into the review because I was able to relate them to my own.
One aspect that impressed me in this article was how the scientists were able to relate the soil found on Mars to artificial sweeteners that we have on earth today. This article was very interesting to me because I find it amazing how technology has enabled us to see and examine materials on a planet millions of miles away. Overall, I think Chris did a fantastic job on this review and it really opened my eyes to see how technology has affected our world and enabled us to learn more about the universe.

  6. I read my classmates review on the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed”. I though Chris did a great job with demonstrating his knowledge on an article that couldn’t give to much information because of the new topic. I enjoyed how he mentioned the discoveries with an explanation to why this discovery is so important to scientists. By citing the doctor’s direct quotes, it helps the reader understand their feelings behind the discovery, which is crucial for making the reader form an opinion. One thing that could have been improved was the relationship on how this affects everyone. Though people are very interested in the topic of finding a place like Earth, it wouldn’t impact the human race right after this new discovery. This discovery, however, is an important step in finding a biological match to Earth. Secondly, with the article not having a lot of given information, it made the review less factual. Having facts to go only with the ideas being put across is crucial. Overall, I was very impressed by the choice in article because it is something most people would find interesting. Having a planet being tested for the similar properties that Earth has should be mentioned more than it is. I also found it interesting how technology is used to find organic properties on Mars that can make it almost suitable for life.

My classmate, Chris, reviewed the article, “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed.” Aerospace education is very important to me, as a Civil Air Patrol Technical Sergeant. One of the missions of this organization that I am a member of is aerospace education. In fact, my squadron reserves 15 minutes each meeting to discuss aerospace.
I really liked Chris’s review for a few reasons. Naturally, I was drawn to the topic, it really interests me. Another thing that I liked was how thorough Chris was in his summary of the article. His summary was not too short, nor lengthy and it held my interest the entire time. Finally, I agree with his opinion of the article. I immediate read the article before the review, and I agree with Chris on all of the points that he made about statistics and descriptive information.
I do not think that Chris’s article review needs any improvement. Proper grammar, formatting, and length were all an A+ in my book. I could not have done a better job myself. I believe that there is not one thing to critique.
One thing that really surprised me in the article review was that the discovery of organics could further lead to the discovery of life on Mars. This is just fascinating to think about. Overall, I would give Chris a perfect score. He did an exceptional job in his selection, and a phenomenal job reviewing it.

  8. My fellow classmate, Chris Gay, wrote his own review of the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed” by Kenneth Chang. This article discusses and uncovers evidence from Mars’ new rover. One of the things Chris incorporated well in this review was the quotes he used from the original article and from the actual scientists who have studied the rover. Chris also used the quotes to give a nice summary and explanation of the purpose of rovers, especially in Mars. One of the things Chris could have done to improve this review was giving his own opinion, which could have added an entirely knew aspect to the review and allowed us to further understand the topic. Chris also definitely could have explained the impact this new rover could have considering he criticized the author of the article for not including the effect. Chris also could have made the review a little less factual to make it easier and more interesting for us to read and comprehend. The thing I found most interesting from this review and article was the astoundingly large amount of similarities between what we believe early Earth was like and Mars today, each with their first signs of organic life.

  9. I read Chris’s article about what the rover discovered on Mars. I think Chris did a good job of explaining the topic and using quotes and the facts in order to support his evidence. He also chose the more important key points from the original article and did not tell us any information that was unnecessary. A good job was also done giving a clear opinion on the original article instead of taking different sides about it.
The summary however could have been improved. He could do this by mentioning how this new discovery further affects our world. Does it mean anything and how? Also some facts that one could not understand should have been simplified.
Finally I really enjoyed the article and learning about this rover. It was very interesting and could definitely affect our world. With technology advancing many more discoveries will happen.

  10. My classmate Chris did a great job on his review of the article “Mars Rover Discovery revealed.” One thing Chris did well, was get straight to the point without leaving the reader confused. It was not like he just kept listing facts from the article, he made the reading very smooth. Another thing Chris did well, was the quotes he chose from the article. The quotes were well chosen and helped him in his review. A third thing Chris did well was that he explained his topic very well, because this topic could be very hard for a reader to understand, but Chris did well. Although his review was good, there are some things he could have done to make it better. First, he could he could have given his own opinion on this topic. This would have shown a new part to the review. Also, he could have explained who Dr. Grotzinger is. One thing I learned from this review that methane has been found on Mars, which is the buildi9ng blocks of life. If methane was found on Mars, who knows what else could be, and maybe life could be on Mars. Overall, Chris did a great his on his review.

  11. I read my classmate Chris’s review on the article “Mars Rover Discovery Revealed”. It was a very interesting review and he did a great job. I like how Chris gave a summary that was simple, easy to understand, and explained the key parts in the article. This made it easier to follow what he was talking about. Also, Chris incorporated multiple quotes into his review. With these quotes it gave me a better understand on how the scientist behind the discovery felt. In addition Chris added key data and names of substances in his write up. For example Chris says, “Grotzinger heated the dirt to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit” and mention substances like chlorinated methane and Carbon dioxide.
Even though the review was great, there were a couple of areas that could have used some improvement. Chris could have given his own thoughts and idea about this amazing discovery after he talked about how the scientists felt. Also, he could have done a better job at introducing Dr. Grotzinger and giving some background information on the Dr.
The best part of Chris’s review was the topic he chose. Before reading this I had no idea that we were making such awesome discoveries on other plants than earth. This topic has really sparked an interest in me to learn more about this topic. Overall Chris’s review was great and I learned a lot from it.

  12. My peer Chris wrote a very intelligent article summary on the planet mars. There are three very intriguing facts. The first one is how the most prominent gases that escaped were water vapor and carbon dioxide. The second most interesting fact was when the doctor mentions how the grain like soil is very similar to artificial sweeteners, but is covered in dirt that has a similar texture to table salt. The third fact was when the doctor made the statement “This is just the beginning . . . our real science mission is still to come”, it shows that he has hope in his research. The two things he could have fixed where how he could have included a little more about the experiment done. The second thing he could have fixed was how he put his own opinion into the article. The thing that was the most outstanding fact that caught my attention was how Dr. Grotzinger is hesitant to declare that the soil definitely contains organics because it is possible that the organics could have been generated by chemical reactions as the dirt was heated. Overall this article summary was perfectly written. BRAVO!

  13. I read Chris' review of, "Mars Rover Discovery Revealed" and it was well written Chris' article interested me for three reasons. The first is how Chris incorporated quotes from Dr. Grotzinger very often. It made the writing flow better and gave the reader some background on the subject of the article. The second is how he explained why every discovery that was made by Dr. Grotzinger was important to scientists and how it could benefit us. Finally, he did a good job keeping the article concise, but informative. He didn't include too many quotes.
While he did a good job on the review, there were a few things he executed poorly. Chris could have added his own opinion at the end to further the review. Second, he could have made it a little easier for the reader to understand the article, as there were some quotes that were hard to follow.
I enjoyed reading this article because these discoveries could change our world and it's exciting to think about what rovers will find in the future.
