Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ In The Digestive System

For hundreds of years scientists have been debating whether the tissue connecting your organs to the intestinal wall was an organ in its own right. Leonardo Da Vinci included this tissue called the Mesentery in his own collection of works talking about the human body but scientists did not think it was an organ of its own right because they did not know if it was one continuous organ of just a group of connective tissue that seem similar. However in the past months an Irish medical scientist by the name of Dr. J. Calvin Coffey had discovered and published evidence saying that the mesentery was an individual organ and should be catalogued as such. In the article he wrote it said that mesentery science should be its own section of study and treatment. A quote in the article lays out a good statement “ The anatomic description that has been laid down for over 100 years of anatomy was incorrect” - Dr. J. Calvin Coffey, this quote just shows the kind of impact this is going to have on true medical community.

This finding will have a profound effect on how we as people study the human body. The famous Gray’s Anatomy textbook will have to be changed in order to include the new organ and all information retaining to it. This finding will help us better fight certain diseases by allowing us to more accurately identify where the problem is in the abdominal area. I can also help us to understand and work on certain types of abdominal cancer and others types of cancer in the lower half of true organ system.

Some of the strengths of this article are that it easily tell the reader what kind of effect this is going to have in the medical community and in our understanding of how our bodies work. One flaw with this article is that it does not dig down deep enough and really tell you about what the mesentery really does and how it affects our bodies. If I were to improve this article I would make the language less harsh on the eyes and include more information on what the mesentery is.

  1. My fellow classmate Peter wrote an extremely insightful and great review on, "Scientists have Discovered a New Organ In the Digestive System. Furthermore, Peter did an excellent job with a few things. For example, Peter does a great job with the beginning of the piece where he brings up the history on how scientists have been mapping out the body. Through this, I have a better understanding of the article and what it will talk about. Also, I liked how Peter talked about the little information on what a mesenteric science is because that was not something that I understood very well. It was a critique that I agreed with entirely because of how much it confused I was. Also the mesentary organ is a new organ so I liked how Peter made a reference to the Gray's Anatomy book and how it must be added too. Lastly, I also liked how Peter included a quote from the text to back up his information. The way he incorporates the quote really enhanced the statement he made before.

While Peter brings up many great points, he should have edited a little more such as when he says "all information retaining to it." It doesn't make too much sense. Another thing that Peter could have improved on was talking a little bit more about the way this new organ really affects the overall medicinal field. The article spends a lot of time talking about the effects of the this organ and its potential to the human body.

One thing that I absolutely found amazing from this article was basically the article in its entirety. It actually boggles my mind that after many many years of research even with the help of modern technology that this organ was just found now. It makes you wonder, what other things or organs we have that we can some day use or has potential use for better things.

I read my classmate Peter’s report on “Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ In The Digestive System.” Peter did a great job reviewing and criticizing the article. He explained the science behind the human anatomy and gave some background on the article as well. Peter excelled in reporting the information, using good vocabulary, understanding the article, and analyzing it. Peter used scientific terms and wrote with an educated and elevated timbre. He also explained the significance of the article and of the discovery of a new organ. Lastly, Peter’s critique/analysis was notable. His review was thoughtful and gave good feedback at the end on what the authors of the article should have done differently.

Although Peter wrote an overall enjoyable review, he can improve in a few spots. He could have furthered his research and explained what the new organ is and what is the function. Peter also could have discussed why it took so long to be considered a new organ. Peter also had soe grammatical and technical issues, missing a letter or comma. Also, his sentence structure was sometimes over the top. He used a phrase like, “less harsh on the eyes” which ultimately took away from his review instead of guiding the research in his conclusion.

While reading Peter’s review, I realized that the human body is extremely complicated and it has taken centuries of medical science and anatomical studies to reach the point of classifying a previous part of the body as its own organ. The article was very interesting and was very recent which helped catch my attention and wish to read the review. This new organ will have a great impact on classes, textbooks and people around the world.

Peter Brennan wrote a brilliant review of the article “Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ In The Digestive System”. The article summarizes a paper which was written about a new organ that scientists discovered, the mesentery. Although it is difficult to name only three things that Peter did well, here are the three best: Firstly, Peter’s review was remarkably well written. All the paragraphs flowed smoothly, the language was consistent, and there were few, if any, typographical mistakes. This made it very easy to understand every piece of information that Peter was trying to communicate. Secondly, Peter’s background section on the history of the mesentery helped to add context to his review. It allowed me to understand that, although people have know about the mesentery for centuries, it is only now that they have confirmed that it was an organ. Finally, Peter did a good job remaining critical about the article and finding improvements that could be made. It showed that this article, which discussed groundbreaking research, was not perfect. The problems Peter discussed were also relatable, as a fellow student.
One of the few improvements I would suggest to Peter is that he end his review with a little more strength. One sentence to wrap up the whole review would have been sufficient to make the information more memorable. Second, Peter left the quote on its own, near the end of the paragraph. To show the quotes's significance, a couple sentences were needed to elaborate. The solution to that is, obviously, just to include those sentences.
The most striking realization I had from reading this article was that scientists are still learning new information about things that they have had plenty of time to study, like the human body. Even today, there is more information out there that we can learn about ourselves. This leaves the door open for new potential breakthroughs in the future, regarding our bodies. I was also struck by how this new breakthrough will help affect future studies of the body, which Peter did a good job explaining.

This review by Peter Brennan about the article titled “Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ in the Digestive System” by Carolyn Gregoire states the recent findings of a medical scientist. The researcher is name Dr. J. Calvin Coffey and he discovered as well as published evidence suggesting that the mesentery was its own organ. The importance of this finding is that medical textbooks will have to be altered to include the mesentery in finer detail and it would also need its own form of study, opening a door to a whole new aspect of medicine. In the review, Peter does a good job of stating the significance of this medical discovery, since he explained the impact it could have on curing and diagnosing certain abdominal cancers. His historical context on the mesentery was also done well because it helped further back the point that medical professional were aware of the mesentery, however still did not consider it an organ. Finally, his review was good since it was quick to the point, yet seemed sophisticated at the same time and interesting.
A few minor improvements however could be made. For instance, although Peter does mention that the article does not explain the purpose of a mesentery, it would have been helpful if he elaborated upon in his review after researching it himself. Additionally, in an instance or two the tenses were mixed up such as in the third paragraph when he states “Some of the strengths of this article are that it easily tell the reader”. A simple rereading could have been done to avoid such an instance.
What most interested me about this article was the simple fact that humans have another organ. I was impressed that after thousands of years of medical professionals studying the human body we still ignored an aspect of humans that seems so significant considering it is an organ. I was wrongly under the impression that most scientists were focusing on finding cures for terminal illnesses however this article opened my eyes, that I was incorrect.

My classmate Peter Brennan reviewed the article, "Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ In The Digestive System." It was about a scientist redefining a part of the body as its own separate organ. A few things that I liked about my classmates review was that he seemed very passionate about his article, including many different details to fully explain the article. Another thing he explains well is the history of the new organ in Leonardo Da Vinci’s work, and how it was cast aside by others. Also, Peter includes his own opinion on the article, pointing out its strengths and weaknesses.

Although there were many good points made in Peter’s article, he could have worked on a few things. There were many places in his review where he could have used a bit more editing, such as when he says "all information retaining to it." Not a very clear statement. Another thing he could have done better in the article was explain the organs function in the body better. The article goes into intricate detail over this new organ.

Something that surprised me from this article is the impact of this discovery. They will have to change multiple textbooks in order for this change to happen. They also have to declare its own section in research. It changes the anatomy structure model that we have had for many years.
