Hayden, Sally. “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” CNN, Cable News Network, 20 Nov. 2018, www.cnn.com/2018/11/20/africa/libyan-migrants-forced-off-ship-intl/index.html.

For my current event I read the article "Nearly 30 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya." In this article Sally Hayden describes how almost 80 migrants have been forced off a cargo ship after it docked at a Libya port following an eleven-day standoff. This standoff began on November 10, when dozens of migrants and refugees, who tried to reach Italy on a rubber boat, were rescued and returned to Libya by the Nivin, a cargo ship with a Panamanian flag. Many refused to leave the ship after it docked at the Libyan port city of Misrata. Some of them told CNN they would rather die than go back to Libya where they said they had been tortured and simply want to be taken to a safe country. The migrants remain hopeful that they will not have to return to the inhuman treatment they experienced in Libya, yet it in unsure what the future will hold. This is an important topic to be studying and reviewing because several migrants and refugees were tortured and hurt and that action has impacted them in various ways.
This article has an affect on society because it creates the need for new jobs and places to live for the migrants. Libya also creates harsh living circumstances for these people making it an unsafe area to live. Because of these certain living conditions, the people compared living there to death, concluding that it was very difficult to withstand. One boy described what it was like briefly and what he saw and how he coped. He added that his brother had died in his own arms. If this issue continues to occur, many people with certainly die or come very close to it.
One thing in particular that I thought was very strong in this article was that the author used real life victims that were some of the only people that went through this tragic incident. I think that it is very important to use quotes or information from a first hand witness or victim because it it the truth and actual emotions that they felt while going through this trauma. The author also got into great depth about the current situation and how it has unfolded which gives insight to the reader about whats currently happening. I think that something the author could have done better was expand even more on the background information. Specifically about how this happened and what will be the next steps for these people. A way to improve upon that is ending the article with a closing sentence which ties everything together because i felt as if she just ended on how these people were feeling and not about the overall topic. But I think overall the author did an exceptional job.

For this current event I read the article written by Alex Doukas on the article“Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” Alex did a great job describing the contents of the article. When she stated that” Sally Hayden describes how almost 80 migrants have been forced off a cargo ship after it docked at a Libya port following an eleven-day standoff.” it was a very strong opening sentence. When Ms. Doukas said in her article how “Some of them told CNN they would rather die than go back to Libya where they said they had been tortured and simply want to be taken to a safe country.” It was really impactful on the reader about the realness of this event. I also appreciated how she was very straight forward when describing the article. She said most of the details very quickly and had many strong sentences. When talking about the importance of the article on society she claimed that “This article has an affect on society because it creates the need for new jobs and places to live for the migrants.”. Her article is all very straightforward. I chose this article because of the fact that I think It is so important to help immigrants and to not leave them hanging. I also found this article very interesting because I had read it before myself.
One thing Alex could improve on was giving detail about the article. She provided the reader with a general idea of what was going on but she did not describe in detail. When Ms. Doukas described how “One thing in particular that I thought was very strong in this article was that the author used real life victims that were some of the only people that went through this tragic incident.” It would of been very cool for her to state one or multiple of these quotes which she also did not have.
After reading this review I learned about the Migrants who were rescued off of a cargo ship in Libya. I further learned how it is important to help immigrants. I chose this article because I thought it was very interesting and I have also read this article before. This will change my life and understanding because it opens by eyes t the crises going on in our world.

  2. Aelx, when reading your article I noticed several things that you did well. The first was including the extent to which your issue covered. “Sally Hayden describes how almost 80 migrants have been forced off a cargo ship after it docked at a Libya port following an eleven-day standoff.” I also thought that it was important that you went into detail about the hardships that these people faced. “He added that his brother had died in his own arms.” One other thing that you did well was adding a good critique for the article, “A way to improve upon that is ending the article with a closing sentence which ties everything together.” Over all, I thought you did a great job with your current event.
Although you did a great job, there were a few things that you could have done different. The first thing would be choosing a topic that is science related. Although your topic was without a doubt an important topic, a science article may have been more fitting for this course. One other critique would be to read over your work a few times. I am only mentioning this because of this sentence, “The migrants remain hopeful that they will not have to return to the inhuman treatment they experienced in Libya, yet it in unsure what the future will hold.” I am adding this because of the “yet it in” part. If you changed it to “yet it is” the sentence would flow better. If you incorporate these small changes into your work, your writing will greatly improve.
When reading your article I learned something important. I had not paid attention to the current struggles in Libya. Now that this issue is getting more coverage and people are sharing more stories others are now more aware about what is happening. Because people are more aware they can try to find a way to solve these problems. Hopefully with the help of others, the conflicts in libya will be dealt with.

Alex Doukas was able to explain the purpose of the article really well and allowed me to gain a good understanding of what was happening in the article before I read it. I chose this because it is important to include, otherwise your review will confuse people that may not know what is happening because they may have not read the article. She is very good at pointing out the importance and relevance of this article. An example of this would be “This is an important topic to be studying and reviewing because several migrants and refugees were tortured and hurt and that action has impacted them in various ways.” I chose this because it is important to strongly state how important something is because without having the importance the article is weak and the review and article have no purpose. Alex also applies good grammar to her review. This is important because it strengthens the review and makes it more credible.

Alex could add more quotes from the article or reference the article more because without this the review can seem less credible. This can be corrected by adding more quotes from the article that relate to something in the review. In her review she is very disorganized and this takes away from the flow of the review. This can be corrected by reading it over and seeing if the flow really makes sense.

It is very fascinating how terrible it can be in some of the African countries and how heartless some people can be. I chose this because we all know how bad the situation is in Africa but I don’t think many people truly realize how bad it is. This changes the way I put my view on Africa and how many people are just victims of horrible rulers that commit terrible atrocities to their people.

For this week’s current events, I reviewed the summary written by Alex Doukas on the article “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” Alex did an excellent job describing the article in which she reviewed. I think the most prominent aspect of her article was the compelling title (the name of the article in which was included in the annotated source): “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” Overall, I was very impacted by the writing that Alex presented. When lines such as “The migrants remain hopeful that they will not have to return to the inhuman treatment they experienced in Libya, yet it in unsure what the future will hold.” made me feel devastated about the ongoing affairs in the east. I feel like it gave me more of a sense of the moral impacts it will toll on many, and what those escaping from Libya have previously overcome. I really liked the pace of the article, whereas many of the statements made were very clear and understandable to the reader. It is very straightforward as well, as readers have the ability to understand the story concisely although not too much in depth. In general, I choose this article because I think that helping immigrants to seek asylum is a human right that is not exercised enough in some countries. I found this article very interesting in particular as I have previously researched the topic in another class.

Although Alex is a very good writer, there were a couple things in which could’ve been altered in order to make it more easy to understand by the reader. In some aspects, I feel as if Alex could have gone into more depth when describing her topic. She mentions “the author used real life victims that were some of the only people that went through this tragic incident,” although never described any of the people that this was demonstrated. This would give the reader a better idea as to what is actually going on throughout Libya, and can make the reader more interested in the topic as it would be coming from a victim's point of view. Also, I feel as if Alex could have described more about the ongoing tragedy in Libya. Although I was aware of this prior to reading the article, many of the readers might need more of an explanation as to the violence occurring currently. By doing some additional research, Alex would have the ability to clearly present this to her audience.

After reading this review, I had more of an idea about the Migrants who were rescued off of the cargo ship in Libya, which further established in my mind just how it is important to help immigrants. I chose this article because I thought it was very interesting and I have studied and researched the topic in a variety of different classes and even in a club in the past. This will change my life and understanding because it opens by eyes to the many crisis going on in our world.

For this week’s Current Event I read Alex Doukas review on "Nearly 30 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya." In this article Sally Hayden describes how almost 80 migrants have been forced off a cargo ship after it docked at a Libya port following an eleven-day standoff. I think that Alex did a very good job writing this article and did numerous things to improve the text. For example, Alex had a lot of details in her article which helped make it easier for the readers to understand and made the article much more interesting to read. Alex also did a great job in grabbing the reader's attention. She did this by stating interesting facts which benefited the article. This his helped the reader not get bored while reading. Another thing that Alex did well was give a strong opinion on weather or not she thought the article was good. She said that she enjoyed the article and we can tell from her response.
Alex had a very solid article. However, I would have added some things to the text to make it even better. First, Alex had some grammar mistakes such as missing punctuation. This could have been easily fixed by proof reading the paper or using an application like grammarly to check the work. Another, thing that I would have changed is having a bit more explanation in the final paragraph. This would help the reader understand why you liked or disliked certain aspects of the article.
I found this article very interesting and I learned a lot from it. One thing that I found to be interesting was the fact that I learned about the Migrants who were rescued off of a cargo ship in Libya. I further learned how it is important to help immigrants. Overall, I thought that this article was very well written and was very insightful.

For our eleventh current event, I chose to read Alex’s review of “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” She quickly and effectively described and explained the issue that was at hand in November. This skillful summary greatly helps the reader. This quote that Alex adds, “Some of them told CNN they would rather die than go back to Libya where they said they had been tortured and simply want to be taken to a safe country,” allows us to see from the viewpoint of the refugees. She again brings up a first hand account of Libya by one of the migrant boys who explains his hardships and allows us to see so easily why these people want to leave. She backs up and explains why and how the writer so effectively used these quotes and it is clear Alex did.
Alex is a good writer, and her current event is good, but there are a few areas of improvement she could work on. She said this was an important topic to be studying and reviewing, but she didn't really give a good reason why except the obvious don't repeat history. She trailed off and should stay on focus a bit more with her writing and I think that would help. She stated that the author went into great depth and analysis of the situation, and why it happened, but Alex herself doesn't go into it in her comment. Some external research present in the writing would have probably tied this comment together.
I learned more about the refugee crisis in the East, and specifically the state of matters in Libya through the best source, first person accounts. I chose to read this article because it has to do with an interesting topic, and is referring to the refugee crisis specifically in Libya which I didn't know anything about until now. Understanding the specific problem in one country allows me to grasp the idea better and compare to other countries with a similar problem. Overall, this comment was very informative and taught me many new things I hadn't known.

For this current events review, I decided to read Alex Doukas’s review of “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya,” by Sally Hayden. Her review was overall very well written. She was able to summarize the article very well while also conveying a message of sympathy towards the reader because of the struggles that the migrants are going through. Another part of her review that was good was give a strong opinion on weather or not she thought the article was good. Finally, Alex was able to grab the reader's attention by adding interesting facts about her topic.
Alex’s review was very well written, however there is always room for improvement. First off, although this topic is very intriguing, current, and important; it is not about biology nor science. I wish she could have included some of the statistics behind the issues and why they keep arising. Lastly, she could have added more quotes from the article or reference the article more because without this the review can seem less credible. This can be corrected by adding more quotes from the article that relate to something in the review.
One fascinating, fact I took away from her article are the tragedies happening around the world. Bronxville is a bubble, where everyone is safe, it is not only nice but eye opening to learn about things happening throughout the world.

For Current Event 12, I decided to read Alex Doukas’ review on the article, "Nearly 30 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya", by Sally Hayden. In the article, Hayden describes how nearly 80 migrants have been forced off of a cargo ship after it docked at a Libya port following an eleven-day standoff. Alex did an excellent job writing her review of this article. For example, she included many details about the article she reviewed which made it easier for readers to understand what the article is actually about, without making it too confusing. Furthermore, Alex successfully grabbed the reader's attention by providing very interesting facts that supported what was said in the article. Alex also gave a strong critique of the author of this article’s work. She provided excellent feedback that the author could use to better her writing.
Although overall Alex’s review is very well written, there are a few things that could be minorly changed in order to make it easily understandable to the reader. Alex could have gone into a bit more depth in some places when describing her topic. This would help the reader better understand what actually happened and what is going on in Libya. This could also keep the reader more interested in the topic as it would be coming from a victim's point of view. Alex could also improve her review by adding more quotes from the article or referencing it more because without this the review feels less reliable. Alex can easily improve her review by adding more quotes from the article to strengthen her claims.
From reading this review, I learned a great deal about the migrants and their situation in Libya. I learned how important it is to help those who are ostracized, specifically immigrants. I chose to read this review because this topic is something I believe to be very important. It is important for everyone to stay informed about the crises that go on every day in our world.

In Alex’s current event regarding the article, “Nearly 80 Rescued Migrants Forced off Cargo Ship in Libya.” there were many good things that Alex did. She incorporated many details as she went through the topic of the article and also included all very necessary details to evoke emotions to her reader. She also left a good impression on the reader because the reader could tell that she cared about the subject and thought it was very important.
A few things that would make her review better would be to include why this is important for biology. Next time, I think Alex should choose a more biological topic so that it stays in the category of science rather than politics and humanitarianism. I also think that she could have added more specifics as to how these migrants were dying and maybe what diseases or injuries they were dying from to add to the review. I also think she could add more quotes to her current event.
I enjoyed this review and was surprised by the information given to me through the review and do think it is a necessary topic to study, but possibly for Polysci, humanities or some other class.
