In the article, 'Headless' Ladybug Identified as a
New Species, Ross Winton, a former entomology grad student at Montana State
University, found a bug in a trap which he set in a sand dune in Southwest
Montana. At first Winton thought that the insect was a part of an ant or
another bug with its head missing. But with further examination, he identified
the one-millimeter long insect as a male ladybug, and found that it was not
actually headless. The ladybugs head was just hidden inside a tube in its
thorax (between head and abdomen), as if it were a turtle in its shell.
I found this article very interesting because I
find its amazing how we are still discovering new organisms to this day and
shows us how much we have yet to discover. As I was reading this article, I couldn’t
help thinking about what we are learning in class about DNA. I was thinking
that maybe this occurred from mutation of a regular ladybug.
Also I find it fascinating that a week earlier another
scientists found a female version of this insect from Baja, California, and
that the bug is so distinct that it was placed in an entirely new genus of ladybug.
Overall, I found the information in this article interesting and very enthralling.
I read Jack Redpath’s article based on the headless ladybug that was identified as a new species. The first thing that was done really well was the conveying of the information. You told us what the topic was about, who founded the bug, and where he is from. Another thing that was done well was the connection that you made to what we are learning in class, suggesting it to a connection to a mutation possibility. The third thing that was good was that you were expressing how you were how new discoveries are made every day.
ReplyDeleteThe article was great but would have been better if we were given more information on the lady bug. I was really interested about learning about this new insect so a more in depth description would have been nice. Also it would have been better to hear more of an opinion on the matter. For example telling us how this new discovery affected society and how it will impact the future of society.
I really enjoyed reading this article and learning about this new lady bug that has been discovered. As with other previous article summaries I have read I really enjoy the discovery of a new species. I think the article summary was also very well written.
Jack did a very good job of making a short and concise summary of the article while still telling most of the core information of the article. He also did a good job of inciting interest in this new topic of insect species that is not too often thought about. Lastly, Jack nicely related this article to what we are learning about in class right now.
ReplyDeleteHowever, when Jack wrote is review, he did not post the link to the article properly, which was inconveniencing. Also, in the last paragraph he made a typo, saying that another scientists found the female of this species, when he should have said another scientist.
As Jack was, I was also surprised that new species are still being found on land, but I was also surprised that scientists actually put traps down to catch bugs in the wild.
My classmate Jack Redpath wrote a review on the article “Headless’ Ladybug Identified as a New Species.” Jack did a good job on this review, and made interesting. One thing I thought Jack did a great job doing was giving his own opinion in the review, he told us what he liked, and what he did not like. Jack also does a good job giving a quick summary on the actual article. The final thing I enjoyed about the review was how Jack connected his article to stuff we are doing in class. I thought that was pretty awesome. One thing I thought Jack could have improved on was possibly including a quote or two from the actual article. I also thought Jack could have gone into greater detail on the summary he gave. All in all Jack did a great job, and I learned a lot from his article and review. The coolest thing about the article was that we are still discovering new species of different things, and with all of our new technology I hope we can continue to do that.
ReplyDeleteJack my fellow classmate reviewed the article, “Headless” Ladybug Identified as a New Species. Jack did a great job giving a voice to the article, because his review had good points of view on the topic. I think he also did a good job of connecting the article to what we are learning; he said that the reason for the different ladybug was a potential mutation. Jack also followed the format really well, he presented the article and told about it, then he offered an opinion then he concluded it well.
ReplyDeleteThe article review was great, although there were a few mistakes with the article. First off I felt the review was very short, I wanted to know a little more about the ladybug and I felt it was missing a little. Also I felt as though the last two paragraphs said the same thing, and if you have two separate paragraphs they shouldn’t be based on the same idea.
Lastly I thought it was very interesting that earlier that same week a different scientist found the female of the same species of the ladybug. I find it interesting the chance of them finding it so close together.
My classmate Jack Redpath wrote a great review on the article, "Headless." One of my favorite things about the review was that Jack related the article to what we are studying in class. For example, Jack inferred that the headless ladybug might have been a result of a mutation. I am not sure if this inference is true, but it is still interesting. In addition, I liked how Jack icluded that the head isn't actually missing but just tucked in a tube in its thorax. Moreover, I liked how Jack made the article very reader friendly, as it was easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the review was very good, Jack could do a few things better, in order to make his next review even better. First off, Jack could have added some more detail, or meat to the review, as I found the review short and lacking further explanation in some areas. Also, Jack could have possible added what the scientists are doing now or what methods they used to make the discovery.
In conclusion, I found Jack's review really interesting because it told me a lot of new information that I never knew. For instance, I never knew that headless creatures actually existed.
I read Jack’s review on the article “'Headless' Ladybug Identified as New Species”. First of all, I like the topic, because it’s always interesting and surprising to find a new species on earth. Jack did a great job on describing how a grad student found the new species: From setting the trap in the sand dune, to thinking what he found was just part of an ant or a bug with its head missing, and the finally identification of a new species. Jack also makes this topic connected to what we learned these days. I think it’s very possible that the mutation has happened because ladybugs want to protect themselves from the vagaries of climate and other animals in Montana. The ladybugs want to reduce the hurts from this bad environment, so they hid their head inside a tube in its thorax. And those species that can’t fit in the environment has all dead because of the bad condition.
ReplyDeleteJack did a very good job on reviewing the article, but there are some suggestions for improving. First, he could add some quotes from the original article, especially some words form other entomologists. This can make the review more specific and more interesting. Second, he could put the second and the third paragraphs together, because they’re both talking about what Jack thinks about the article. And maybe add another second paragraph which talks about how the new discovery makes us steps forward on investigating nature.
The article really surprised me that these very small insects are still mutating to fit the environment. Or maybe the species that we can find today are only species that adapt the environment therefore can be alive.
My classmate Jack wrote on review on the article called “‘Headless’ Ladybug Identified as a New Species” summarizing this new distinctive species. One thing I think Jack did really well was presenting an interesting article that wouldn’t bore the audience reading it. Some articles that have been reviewed haven’t been very interesting, but Jack managed to review an article that people would want to further read. Next, he didn’t copy the article word for word in his summary; he put the article into his own words. Lastly, I enjoyed how he connected the article to what we are studying in class, DNA. Jack thought that there could’ve been a mutation in the ladybugs DNA causing its head to become hidden. Though it was a good review, I found a few corrections that could’ve been made. First, the review was very short with not a lot of detail about the article being reviewed. I feel that more information on the topic and more summarization could’ve been given. Secondly, although the topic can relate to what we are studying in class, I feel that this article doesn’t really affect mankind as a whole. Though it is fascinating, a different article would have been a better choice because of this ones length in size. Lastly, I was very impressed by how Jack linked his article with our studies in biology now. Jack’s findings have introduced me to a new type of specimen that is walking around on our planet.
ReplyDeleteMy fellow classmate, Jack Redpath, summarized an article titled, “‘Headless’ Ladybug Identified as a New Species.” The article mainly focuses on the discovery of an entirely new species of ladybug insects. One of the many things I enjoyed in this review was how Jack connected the topic of this article to what we are learning in class now, which is DNA. This connection made it easier to understand how this irregular and possibly mutated organism came to be. I also found this topic interesting because Jack really explained the newfound species well, including where the insect was found and the characteristics of this new ladybug. To improve this review Jack could have referred to the article a little more by quoting the original. Jack also should have added the link to the article in a better spot and done it correctly. These small corrections could have given the review more depth and make it more specific. Overall, Jack’s review was incredibly interesting and enlightening and it shocked me to read that this amazing, unbelievably evolved species was only just discovered recently!
ReplyDeleteJack did a great job on his review on the article “Headless Ladybug Identified as a New Species.” First, I thought Jack presented his info and facts very well. For example, I liked how Jack started out by telling us who the scientist was behind this experiment. Second, I thought that when he related back to what we were learning in class was presented very well because when you make connections things are easier to learn. I liked how he told us that we are finding new organisms everyday, because not everyone thinks about this. Even though Jack’s review was great, there are a few things he could to do make it better. First, he could have given the opinions of other scientists on this discovery. Second, he could have added maybe a picture of what the ladybug looks like. Lastly, I never knew that there were different types of ladybugs, I thought there was just one main type. Overall, Jack did a great job in reviewing this article.
ReplyDeleteMy classmate Jack wrote a review on the article, 'Headless' Ladybug Identified as a New Species. In his review he did a good job and made his review very interesting. Jack did a fine job at giving a short summary that included key details in the article that were necessary to understand what he was writing about. Also, he connected contain in the article to what we are currently learning in class showing that he really comprehend the article and understands class material. In addition, I liked how when reading the review I could tell that jack a interest in this topic and enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteEven though Jack wrote a great review he could make a few improvements to the review. One thing he could improve was the length of his summery even though he did include key points in it I found It a little short and it would have been nice to have more information. In addition, to make the review more interesting for the reader jack could have included a quote or two from the article.
The best part of this review was the topic itself I found it so intriguing that we are still finding undiscovered species on earth. This makes me wonder how many other species are still waiting for use to discover them.
