In the article “Whooping cough
vaccine recommended for all pregnant women”, published on October 14, 2012 on
cnn.com. This article explains the effective uses of a vaccine to give pregnant women.
The Advisory
Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) for the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention met Wednesday and voted 14 to 0. The committee
says the vaccine should be administered during each pregnancy in the late
second or third trimester, which is in 27 to 36 weeks. The mother should again receive
the vaccine after childbirth, Jennifer Liang, a member of the ACIP, told the
committee, “The vaccine is very safe in all trimesters and could be given at
any time during pregnancy.” Pertussis,
is another way of saying whooping cough because of the whooping sound made when
the patient breathes, is a highly contagious upper respiratory disease caused
by bacteria. It is horrible when a new born contracts this because their immune
systems are building up slowly and not strong enough, it can cause disability
and worst case death.
Medical experts say getting the vaccine during pregnancy allows the mother to transfer pertussis antibodies to the newborn. That helps protect the infant until it is old enough to get vaccinated against whooping cough. The whooping cough vaccination is usually is given at 2 months of age. The vaccine also protects the mother during delivery, making it much less likely she'll transmit whooping cough to the baby in the first place.
Overall, this is a very factual and it talks about the extremes of not having the vaccine from when you are young. I enjoyed reading this because it went into depth and the warnings, as well as the people behind this discovery.

I read Vivian’s article on whooping cough and she did a great job explaining what whopping cough was. One thing Vivian did well was telling us what whopping cough was; it is a disease that is in the upper respiratory caused by bacteria and in some cases it is fatal to infants. Another thing that Vivian did well was explaining why it was important to get the vaccination while you were pregnant because it is very dangerous to the infant. A third thing Vivian did well was explaining other names for whooping cough like pretusis. It means the same thing, but pertusis is a fancier way of saying whooping cough.
ReplyDeleteOne thing Vivian could have done better was explaining how to give the vaccine to a pregnant woman and how it would transfer to the baby. Also another thing Vivian could have done better was explaining the beginning a little more, I was confused because I didn’t know what the meeting was about and what they were voting on. But overall she did a great job with the article and explained thing really well.
One thing that impressed was I didn’t know you could give a vaccination to a pregnant woman and the baby would be able to get the vaccination as well so that it was protected from this harmful whooping disease before it was able to get a real vaccination after it was born. Overall I think Vivian picked a really good article to research and it has definitely improved my knowledge further.
