Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution

In the article “Sunlight worsens jet pollution” by Stephen Ornes I learned how airplanes are producing more pollution then many think. In a recent study done by Allen Robinson, it was found that sunlight is worsening the amount of pollution that the airplanes create. A chemical reaction takes place when the sunlight hits the tiny molecules that the planes create. The scariest part about this is that mass of pollution particles multiplied by 35. Allen Robinson said, “Those numbers “sort of blew our minds.” Those numbers are very scary considering the amount of air traffic in our world. In order for Robinson and his colleagues to complete this experiment they needed to capture the pollution. They used big, inflatable bags called smog chambers. Once the scientists had captured the jets emissions, they would either allow sunlight to stream in, or turn ultraviolet lights. The light began a process known as photooxidation, which happens when light and oxygen mix. Photooxidation sparked an increase in the number of pollution particles created by the planes. So as the planes are waiting to takeoff, or in the air, they are doing a lot more damage than one would think.

This study is something very relevant to our world considering there is a high concern for pollution, and global warming. Airplanes are so essential to the world, and the fact that they are giving of more pollution then we think is frightening. With so much concern on lowering the pollution given off from cars, we need to start thinking about lowering the amount of pollution given off by planes. Airport emissions have been on a steady increase the last few years, which is not good. In a world that is nervous and scared of global warming, people need to recognize all of the pollution threats, including airport emissions.

I found this article interesting, as well as resourceful. I enjoyed the fact that this is such a big issue in the world, and to be honest I had never really heard about airplanes giving of a lot of pollution. I thought the writer did a great job, and all and all I enjoyed this article mightily.

  1. My peer Brendan Walsh, he wrote a commentary on the article “Sunlight worsens jet pollution” by Stephen Ornes, which talks about how plane fuel is pollution. There were some interesting points in his commentary, three of them are: how the light began a process known as photo oxidation, which happens when light and oxygen mix. The second thing was Airplanes are so essential to the world, and the fact that they are giving of more pollution then we think is frightening. The third fascinating fact was how In a world that is nervous and scared of global warming, people need to recognize all of the pollution threats, including airport emissions. These all pulled I n my attention but what pulled it away was how he could improve on including a little more of an opinion to make his commentary his. One more thing he could have improved was introducing the article. Although it was a phenomenal write up he wrote something that I have never heard of was how the sunlight is worsening the amount of pollution that the airplanes create. Overall this was a good commentary.

  2. I read my classmate Brendan Walsh’s review on the article, “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution.” This review was very well written and was interesting to read. Some things Brendan did well was explain what happens in the chemical reaction as to why the sunlight is worsening jet pollution. Another thing he did well was defining words like photo oxidation and what it does. Lastly Brendan provided some really interesting facts with us that have furthered our knowledge.
Two things Brendan could have worked on was giving the article more of his personal point of view so that it had an opinion to it and not just facts. Another thing Brendan could have done better was introducing the article, the review went right into detail and it would have been a little easier to understand a general idea first.
One thing I found very interesting is that planes are causing pollution even before they take off. I was unaware of this, this article was really interesting to read and has furthered my knowledge.

  3. I read a review by Brendan Walsh about an article called “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution” by Steven Ornes. The article talked about how airplanes are producing more pollution than many think. The review was very interesting and well written. Brendan did a good job at explaining the chemical reaction that took place to the airplane pollution when sunlight hits it. Also, I like how quotes were integrated into the review making the review more detailed. In addition, I found the examples Brendan used to be very fascinating and I did not know them before.
Even though Brendan’s review was good there were a couple of areas he could made improvements on. He could have given the opinions of other scientists on this discovery or pilots that fly commercial plans that create the most pollution. Brendan as well could have given details on how people are now trying to prevent from this pollution problem from getting worse.
One thing I found very interesting about this review was I never relieved how much planes really pollute our environment. Reading this review has made me wonder how will we fix this problem?

  4. I read Brendan Walsh’s article review “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution”. Brendan did a fantastic job giving strong examples from the article. For instance, the fact that a chemical reaction takes place when the sunlight hits the tiny molecules that the planes create is amazing and is not something one would think of. Also, I liked how Brendan included words from the article, and his choice of words and description made her article very easy to understand.
I believe that Brendan’s review could have been improved if he incorporated a little more summary about how this pollution was discovered and a little more about the effect of it. I really enjoyed how he incorporated his opinions into the review because I was able to relate them to my own.
One aspect that impressed me in this article was how the scientists were able to discover this new type of pollution. This article was very interesting to me because these planes cost about 16.3 million dollars to make a piece and they give off this unbelievable amount of pollution. Overall, I think Brendan did a fantastic job on this review and it really opened my eyes to see how technology has affected our world and enabled us to learn more about life and how we now have to try to fight pollution that we are creating.

  5. My classmate, Brendan Walsh, wrote a great review on "Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution." I found this review to be incredibly interesting, and well written. One of the aspects that I loved about the review was that Brendan included how the scientists discovered the information. Brendan said that used smog chambers to trap the molecules and get the data. In addition, I liked how Brendan gave a quote, which helped me grasp the tone of the article. Brendan did a great job defining and explaining the complicating parts of the article, such as photooxidation.
Although this review was very good, the review could easily be made better. For example, Brendan could have added what the scientists are doing to solve the problem because I was left wondering how we might fix the problem. Also, Brendan could have added more statistics and results from the experiment.
One aspect of this article that impressed me was that we are still discovering how technology is effecting. It is ironic that technology, like airplanes, is really helpful to us but is devastating to the environment. This helped me realize that our technology is more harmful that most people realize.

  6. My classmate Brendan Walsh reviewed the article, “Sunlight worsens jet pollution”. I think he did a great job reviewing the article and bringing it to life. His review was well written and I feel he really knew what he was talking about. I appreciated how he gave a good step by step description of the experiment using the smog chambers. I also liked how he related the article to the problems of today.
Although there were a few problems, in the article it refers to the various problems with airplane emissions but it doesn’t suggest any ways to improve the situation. Also the review uses words like frightening and scary and I feel this makes it a little intimidating, as opposed to sounding informative, and gives it the wrong tone intended.
But overall I think the article was very good. I found it very interesting that during photo oxidation that the particles multiply by 35.

  7. My classmate Brendan Walsh read the article “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution” and wrote a well-done review on it. Brendan did a good job on describing the experiment that the scientists did. He shows the detailed processes of capturing jet emissions and the reason behind its high increasingly pollution by giving the chemical reaction of it. Another thing Brendan did great was organizing the original article, from the experiment, to the fascinating result and the relation to the earth we live on. He emphasizes the importance of paying more attention to the pollution we made from these very essential transportations. It is very good to mention that because that the reason why we care about it.
Two aspects that he might improve on were: Comparing the pollution of Jet planes and cars. It’s interesting to know more about the detailed of how much pollution can be made by the cars, bus and planes that we mostly all have used before. He could also talk about how we improve the function of these transports to make it less polluted.
Overall, Brendan did a fascinating job on summarizing the article and giving his own voice and opinion of this interesting topic. The fact that sunlight and make the pollution particles multiply by 35 really surprised me and I hope we can find better ways to solve this problem.

My classmate, Brendan Walsh, reviewed the article, “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollutions,” by Stephen Ornes. I must admit, this the title of this article caught my attention immediately because flying is a hobby of mine.

I really liked the article that Brendan chose. It is probably an article that I would just read on my own. I also liked Brendan’s opinion of the article. I agree with him on all of the points that he mentioned. A third thing that I liked about his article was related to a major world topic. It was just a great article choice, that’s all that needs to be said.

A few things that Brendan could improve on for next time are his explanations. He used a few difficult words that I had to look up on my own, which was a little inconvenient, pun intended. Another thing that he could work on is his punctuation. I he forgot a few commas and did not site a quote correctly. Other than that, he did a great job.

One thing that really surprised me was simply the fact that planes are polluting so much. I knew that they were contributing to the problem, but I did not know that they were doing this much damage. Overall, I think that this was a great article choice and a great review.

  9. My fellow classmate Brendan Walsh wrote his review on an article called, “Sunlight Worsens Jet Pollution” by Stephen Ornes. This article discusses the amount of pollution created by airplanes. This commentary contained many interesting points, especially the common ignorance that most people today have when it comes to airplanes and their pollution specifically in a modern world where everyone is against pollution Also the fact that planes are such a huge part of our world today, with millions of flights a day, its scary to think of all of the pollution it makes. Another thing that made this review very informative was Brendan’s use of quotes from the original article and his obvious familiarity with this subject. To improve this article Brendan definitely could have concluded this review with some ways that this problem could be prevented. Brendan also could have enriched his analyze even more if he added or even explained how the scientists had come to this conclusion. Overall though this commentary was spot on and has made me interested and has got me wondering what will come next after this giant discovery.
The thing that I found especially intriguing to learn was that it’s sunlight that’s worsening the jet’s already excessive amount of pollution. This point could definitely have a lot to do with a theory most scientists believe in, which is global warming.

  10. I read Brendan’s article about the pollution that planes give off. I thought the facts that Brendan gave put a good effect on the summary for example that there was 35 times more pollution created by the plane. Another thing that was done well by Brendan was the descriptiveness of the experiments that were done. He gave specific procedures that were taken such as capturing the jet emissions or when photooxidation occurs. A last thing that was represented well by Brendan was that he told the reader the important things about the experiment and didn’t go too much into detail with the less important things. It was not boring because it contained the right amount of information and flowed well.
I think that the article could have been improved however. I think we needed to hear more of an opinion from Brendan. Also at some points it got a bit repetitive that planes are big in polluting. It would have been interesting to compare the pollution to something we know that pollutes such as cars so the reader can get a sense.
I also did not ever think of planes dealing a lot of pollution on the environment. This was very interesting to learn also that there are 35 times more pollution molecules. I thought that this was a cool topic and thought the summary was very well written.
