2015’s record heat: It will soon be ‘normal’

In the article, “2015’s record heat: It will soon be ‘normal’,” by Thomas Sumner, the reader learns many interesting things about how the odd winter heat in 2015 will be a normal part of our lives as soon as the 2020’s. In the article, Sumner talks about the known reason for global warming, which is that greenhouse gasses are being “dumped” into air which is creating the average temperatures to rise. Scientists are claiming that these new temperatures the, “new normal.” Sophie Lewis, a climate scientist in Australia, and her team have been conducting a lot of research to learn the truth about the future of earth's climate. They knew that the temperature in the future depends on the amount of greenhouse gasses, especially carbon dioxides. By figuring out the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere, they could were able to make a rough estimate about what the climate will be like in upcoming years. They learned that, if the carbon dioxide levels stay at the place they are, winters will be as warm as 2015’s almost always. They also learned that even if carbon dioxide levels are drastically cut, by 2040 the winters will be just like that of 2015. Another interesting idea to think about that Sumner ends at the end is that completely warm winters will be not that uncommon in the 2020’s if everything goes the way it should.
After completing this article, it makes me think about how different society will be in the 2020’s if everything happens as it’s supposed to. The data that Lewis collected is just one more proof that the climate is changing because of greenhouse gases, and it is changing a lot faster than originally believed. Now that we know Lewis’s data, people should expect the climate to change very fast. If the data ends up being true, we can expect winter coats to be almost never worn in areas such as the East coast because the winters will feel like autumn, like the last one. Another interesting thing to think about is how climate change will affect this upcoming winter. If it is as warm as the last, maybe the climate is warming up even faster than originally believed. Also, on the article, there is a diagram of the whole world’s winter last year. According to it, about 80% of the world last winter was warmer than usual, and about 15% of earth had its warmest ever winter. This means that climate change isn’t happening in only industrialized areas, but throughout the whole world in every single society across it.
Overall, this article was pretty good, however, it did have some issues worth mentioning that could have been better. One aspect of it that was good was its ability to translate Lewis’s experiment into something that average people can understand. Often, scientific articles use words that nobody understands which leads to a lack of knowledge learned or a misunderstanding. This article, however, keeps the words easier to understand. Another good aspect of the article is that it mentions if the data by Lewis doesn’t go to plan. In articles about an experiment done, they never say what would happen if the information is false. In this article however, Sumner does mention what would happen if the data from the experiment was much less then thought, the warmness of the 2015 winter will be regular in the 2040’s. One bad aspect of the article was the length of it. Sumner could have made the article longer and went into deeper information about the experiment that Lewis conducted. If he had done that, the overall quality of the article would have been much better.

My classmate, Tommy, wrote a current event based on the article “2015’s record heat: It will soon be ‘normal’” by Thomas Sumner. This was a great review with many good aspects. First, He provided a clear and organized summary. It had a constant flow of information and gave just the right amount to inform the reader on what the article was saying. Next, I liked how Tommy included the cause of this climate change. He stated, “The data that Lewis collected is just one more proof that the climate is changing because of greenhouse gases” this is important to the article because it doesn’t leave readers wondering why there has been such a drastic change in winter weather. Lastly, I thought it was great that Tommy included the percentages of the world that was affected. “About 80% of the world last winter was warmer than usual, and about 15% of earth had its warmest ever winter.” This explains how even places that don’t have a lot of industries are also being affected, showing how serious this is.
Though there were many great aspects, there were two things that could be improved upon. First, Tommy includes a sentence that says “the known reason for global warming, which is that greenhouse gasses are being “dumped” into air…” though many people know what greenhouse gasses are, it would have made the article a lot more informative if he gave a brief explanation as to what they are since it is mentioned multiple times. Also, he mentions that the winter of 2015 was abnormal and seems like autumn for the most part. Though he could have included that some places that usually get a lot of snow, such as New York, didn't get nearly as much as it usually would to give people a perspective on the uncommonness.
After reading this review, I know how greenhouse gasses can drastically change the climate. It is surprising that even if something is done, the winter in 2040 fould be like 2015’s abnormally warm winter. This changes my understanding of the gasses being emitted by industries because it can change our winters in such a way that we might not need winter coats any longer. This could be also be very harmful to colder environments who have evolved to survive in only the cold weather. Overall, this review left me wondering what can be done to slow or stop greenhouse gasses from being emitted into the air.

  3. My classmate Tommy wrote a review on the article, “ 2015’s Record Heat: It will soon be normal”, by Thomas Sumner. The article is about how the “odd” heat this winter may become recurring. I thought my classmate Tommy did a great job writing his review. One reason I think this is because he did a good job relating his topic to society when he told the readers about how winter will never feel the same, soon it will feel more like autumn. Another thing I think Tommy did well was was how he was able to critique the author by saying that Sumner could have explained the experiments more so it was easier for non-scientist to understand. Also Tommy did a great job, providing facts like when he told the reader that in 80% of the world winter was warmer than usual last year. This helped the reader understand how many people climate change was affecting, and the problems are not just in polluted areas.
Although I think Tommy did a great job overall on his current event review, I still think there are some things he could do to improve his review. One thing I think Tommy could have done to improve his review is he could have included specific quotes from the article instead of just explaining facts in his own words so the reader could be sure they were true. If he had done this I think that the review would be given more credibility because the quotes could have backed up his claims. Another way for Tommy to improve his review is that he could have included more information about how they did the experiments to find the information about climate change. This would have been helpful so the readers could understand where the information was coming from.
Overall, I think Tommy’s review was very good and he covered an important and relevant topic. Now that I have read this article I am very concerned that I could have already lived my coldest winter and now they will only get hotter and hotter. Also, I am concerned that we will never have another snow day, or have a heavy snowfall in the winter ever again.

Tommy wrote a great review of the article, “2015’s Record Heat: It Will Soon Be Normal”, by Thomas Sumner. This piece tells about the increase in heat during 2015’s winter and how it may become a recurring theme. This was a very well done review and an intriguing article. One of the reasons I liked Tommy’s review was because it was clear and concise, as well as organized. His review flowed and had a good amount of information so the reader could comprehend the main idea of the article. In addition, I thought it was very impactful for Tommy to include quotes like, “About 80% of the world last winter was warmer than usual, and about 15% of Earth had its warmest ever winter”. This is a scary fact and I thought it was very important that Tommy included it in the article, because it really opened my eyes. Finally, Tommy used lots of facts to back up his statements. For example, he wrote, “The data that Lewis collected is just one more proof that the climate is changing because of greenhouse gases”. This gives the reader an understanding of the cause of the climate changing, and does not leave them questioning.

Even though this review is well done, there are some minor issues to address. The first spot is when Tommy mentions that the winter of 2015 was abnormal and felt like autumn for almost all of winter. He could have included the change in snow in specific areas across the world. I think it would have added to the review to make it feel personal. It would have been nice to know how much New York has changed since the 2014 winter. Secondly, Tommy includes the sentence, “... the known reason for global warming, which is that greenhouse gases are being ‘dumped’ into air…” though many people know what greenhouse gases are, it would have added the level of understanding of the article if Tommy had given an explanation of how greenhouse gases work, since it is a major part of the article.
Overall, I thought this review was well-written and had a clear message. I knew that greenhouse gases can drastically change climate across the world, but I wasn’t aware at how drastic the change was. It’s astonishing that it can change from just one year to the next and be so different. I am concerned however that we will not be getting as much snow as we used to. I hope this will change soon.

This review of Thomas Sumner’s Science News for Students article titled, “2015's Record Heat: It Will Soon Be 'normal’” by classmate Tommy Purdy, was thoroughly explained and examined. His report covered known reasons for global warming and the recent rising temperatures. Tommy did an excellent job stating what was covered in the Science News for Students article, and what scientists were involved in the research. Tommy did an amazing job making sure that the reader would know what the article was about. He gave data that was discussed in the article and explained why this research was important. Tommy’s review was short and concise, making this review easy to comment on.

Even though Tommy’s review was great, there were a couple of places that lacked attention. Instead of just stating the facts, Tommy could have included quotes from the original Science News for Students article, backing up his own stated facts. In another spot in his review, Tommy could have explained what greenhouse gasses are, if a reader needed explanation. He could have given a bit of help to those who needed it, making sure that the reader understands what the article was about.

After carefully reading this review, I know fully understand how greenhouse gasses can change the climate drastically. This change in temperatures could hurt the civilizations with colder environments, who have adapted to survive in the cold weather. This review left me wondering what can possibly be done to stop global warming, and actually how big of an issue this actually is.
