Purging Cells in Mice Is Found to Combat Aging Ills

Recently, researchers discovered a special category of cells, known as senescent cells. These cells promote the aging of tissues. They hope that by cleansing the body of the cells, they could postpone many of the diseases of aging. Scientists performed a couple of experiments, but many more will be needed before they know if drugs can be developed to help people live longer. They found that senescent cells accumulate, and therefore speed up the aging of tissues. A research team led by Darren J. Baker and Jan M. van Deursen at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has generated a strain of mouse and performed two experiments on them. In the first experiment, the mice received a drug that forced the cells to self-destruct. The mice’s tissues showed a major improvement in the usual problem of age-related disorders and the mice retained the fat layers in the skin that usually thin out with age and cause wrinkling in people. Dr. van Deursen’s work is the first to show that removing senescent cells is beneficial. The discovery that senescent cells seem to be the cause of tissue degeneration opens out a new direction for researchers on aging to explore. In a second experiment, the mice were not given the cell-cleaning drug until they were middle-aged, however, aging was still delayed in their fat and muscle tissues. Dr. Campisi of the Buck Institute, said that the purpose of the research was not to make people live a thousand years, but to increase health span.
I believe that this article affects us greatly. The discovery of these cells and there use is a big achievement. This finding may be the result of people living a healthier and longer life. Another benefit would be that people would still look young at an older age. If scientists develop a drug to get rid of these senescent cells, humanity will be greatly affected by it and the further generations will adapt better traits.
I found this article very interesting to read. I think that this is a helpful and amazing discovery because; the development of a drug would lead to a beneficial life for everyone. I think it would also eliminate women’s’ use of botox, because it would have a similar affect, but in a healthier way.

Joanna did a good job summarizing, and she included a lot of information from the original article to support her report. She described well why this discovery of senescent cells is important and how drugs could potentially reduce aging in humans some day. I also liked how she summarized how the drugs worked in rats and could work in humans.
Joanna had a good summary, but she could have gone into further detail about senescent cells, like where they appear in the body, and exactly how they function biochemically. Also, Joanna stressed more the importance of studying in the field of anti-aging, because allowing people to live healthier for longer is something people have sought for centuries.
Finally, I found Joanna’s report to be fascinating. The idea of extending healthy living is amazing, and could seriously help many people live better, healthier lives.

  2. This article was a very interesting read, for there are many thing in the media today that have claimed to reverse aging. Now, there is scientific proof to fix age related disorders. This article does a nice job giving background information on the topic. Also, a personal opinion about the issue is a very refreshing view to consider. Finally, this article is useful and relevant to women and many others in real life.
However, there could be some adjustments. Some information about the lead researchers on the topic could have been useful to analyze the article. Also, maybe some information on how this could affect the future of America’s image could have been interesting to read.
All and all, this article really stood out for me because the image of America is so micro-focused on looking young, that this article releases information that a new way of looking young without injections or special costly treatments are beginning to come available and I think that the image of America will change because of that

  3. Joanna wrote a magnificent summary on “Purging Cells in Mice Is Found to Combat Aging Ills.” She wrote a strong article on how the cells in mice help fight aging illnesses. Joanna did an amazing job of summarizing the articles information with a lot of detail. She described how the drugs that work in rats also have a large opportunity to work in humans as well. She also perfectly described why the discovery of senescent cells is important and how drugs would eventually be able to reduce the aging of humans.
Joanna did a great job writing this summary, however she could have elaborated on the analysis of the article. It would have been helpful for her to include information on how the cells could affect America as a whole. More detail on the senescent cells would have been very helpful to understanding this topic.
The summary of this article was great and it helped me to understand there is a way to change things in the world. Anything is possible as long as people try and work hard to achieve a goal to help others. I learned that Purging cells found in mice combat aging illness.

  4. I liked how in her review, Joanna started by describing the cells and what they did, then talked about the experiment, then summed it all up. This really helped me to understand the article better, and she was to the point. She also did a good job of adding the key facts and names form the article, but she did not add any information, that was not needed in the summary. Joanna also did a nice job of saying why these drugs are important. She gave two different, but very good examples of each, and it showed me how important the drug is.

I think Joanna could have talked about the cells themselves a little more. I am interested in where these cells come form, what types of cells they are and many other things. I also think Joanna could have shown some predictions as to when drugs like these might be ready. Even if they were not in the article, she could have done a little bit of outside research.

I never knew that scientists were so close to inventing drugs like these. There are always advertisements about anti-aging drugs, but I never knew that we were so close to having one that actually works.

  5. Over all I thought Joanna did a great job on her article of “Purging Cells in Mice”. Joanna did a great job summarizing her article and got a lot of the main detail, especially about the part when she talks about how the drugs worked on rat and could work on humans. I also liked how Joanna explained the importance of the drug and how it might be able to reduce the aging of humans. This really shows me their importance.
Johanna did a really good job writing this article, but there are some areas where she could improve on. I think Johanna Should have include how this new research would affect us as a whole. I also think that she could have used the information in the article and analyzed it a little more for us.
I enjoyed this article very much. I never knew that we were close to coming up with drugs like this. I thought it was very interesting learning about how purging cells found in mice combat aging illness. The ideal of extending life is truly amazing and life changing.
