A Drug That Wakes the Nearly Dead

There have been many times where parents, relatives, and friends have to choose between the life and death of someone they love in the case of an accident that leaves the victim either brain dead or on a ventilator. However, a pharmaceutical sleeping medication called Ambien along with many other sleeping medications have been in the spotlight since it has a surprising effect- it can literally wake the dead.

Since the first case in 1999, there have been reports on how sleeping medications can be the deciding factor between life and the state of vegetation. However, the seemingly magical effects of these drugs will only appeal to a mere 10% of the people in need as scientists at Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and at the University of Pennsylvania, both in the Philadelphia area, began the first large-scale clinical study of zolpidem as a treatment for disorders of consciousness. With these kinds of tests, the question remains- what do these bizarre happenings tell us about the brains ability to heal?

These drugs have not proved a full regain of conscience, but have put the patients in a state of minimal conscience where the patient is able to communicate with eye blinks, finger wiggles, and slight movements of the hands. These progressions though give family and friends false hope on the condition of the patient, often getting their hopes and expectations up. Most people living in minimal conscience end up in nursing home care, unable to communicate further. But in general, these sleeping drugs have given rise to the study of how the brain Is able to heal after being though traumatic shock, opening up many doors of research

  1. I think Madi did a very good job with her current event, I felt It was well presented, and it was easy to read. I liked how Madi explained what the drug Ambien was in the beginning it gave the article a nice flow. Also I felt Madi did a very good job with the facts for example she had facts about the times people have been affected by this drug, which I felt that no one had taken and collected that many facts in their current event. I also felt Madi put a lot of effort into this article. Also I enjoyed how Madi left questions that forced my mind to run.

I believe Madi could type it better, I felt it was in a way hiding what she was trying to say. Also I think she could have taken the little time to make sure all her words were in the same font and in the same size. The last thing was just a distraction.

I thought this article was very interesting and I felt it spoke to me. I enjoyed how madi left my mind running. From her we can use this idea to find out if we can actually try drugs and see if they could resurrect people with heart problems or any other way a person could die internally.

  2. Overall, I think Madi did a great job with her review of the article, A Drug that Wakes the Nearly Dead. She presented the facts of the article in a clear and concise way. Therefore, her review was very easy to follow and retain the important information. Also, Madi did a good job with her first introduction paragraph. In only 2 sentences she was able to introduce her topic in a very nice way and her introduction really got my attention. Making me want to read her review and the article itself. Also, she did a good job including details.
Although Madi did a good job on her review, there are some areas where I think she could have improved. I think Madi’s review would have been stronger if she included details from Chris’s story. Also, Madi’s review could have been improved if she included more information about the brain that is included in the article. For example, how the drug would work if the person got in a vegetative state due to lack of oxygen, in comparison to getting in a vegetative state due to serious trauma.
I found this article to be very interesting. Modern medicine and discoveries made using medicine like this one amaze me. This article showed me how advanced medicine is these days, and how the world of medicine keeps progressing.

  3. I think that Madi’s article review on A Drug that Wakes the Nearly Dead, was very good. First of all, I felt that the topic Madi chose was very interesting and intrigues a reader to want to learn about this drug. Another aspect of this article review that I really enjoyed was how Madi was able to create a concise summary that really summed up the article in the first paragraph. I also really liked that the tests and statistics that she incorporated such as, how the drugs will only appeal to a mere 10% of the people in need, in to the review that helped support her main points and makes the review more interesting.
Although, I do think that there are some improvements Madi could do to make her review even better than it is. I first think that after the first paragraph, it got a little bit confusing and sort of hard to follow. I believe if the second and third paragraphs were a little bit more organized, it would have been even easier to follow. I also think that if Madi added information on how Ambien and other sleeping medications affect the brain to awake people and give them the ability to move their fingers or blink. I feel this would have made the article more interesting and also helped to understand the whole plot better.
Altogether, I really enjoyed Madi’s article review. It really made you think what is coming for us in the future if scientists are already finding ways to awaken people from the dead. This whole topic really fascinated me because I never thought in my lifetime would scientist be able to come up with something so incredible that could change future generations.

  4. Madi did a very good job with her article review, and presented all the facts in a way that was both interesting and easy to read. This helped me to follow her summary without getting too confused. She also did a very good job of summarizing the key points of the article in a clear and concise way. She did not go into the unnecessary details and was able to stick to the main points of the article. Madi incorporated a lot of the important details and statistics very well. She gave dates and statistics, which helped me to understand everything better.

Even though Madi did a very good job with her article summary, there are a few things she could have done a little better. I think Madi could have added a few more statistics about the medicine and its effects. Even if it was not in the article, she could have looked them up. Also, I think Madi could have gone into a little more detail about how the medications effect the brain in ways that allow things like this to happen.

Overall, Madi did a very good job with her article review. I think it is amazing how simple medications are able to do such amazing things.

  5. Madi chose a great article to summarize. Overall she did a great job and made her summary very organized and understandable. She included a lot of detail into her summary, but was able to sum it up without making herself repeat. Her explanation of the drug Ambien was helpful and it affects on the human brain. Also the fact that she included examples about everyday people made this article very interesting because she also took it form her point of view. Also by including the statistics of what the people think about this drug made her summary clear and comprehensible.
Even tough Madi used great detail; I felt that she could’ve included more statistics and peoples opinions. I also think that she should have added more about the medications effect on the brain and explain why the person never truly recovers. If she included the reason for this brain’s reaction it would be easier to understand the whole situation better and the significance it has on the brain.
The article that Madi chose to summarize was very fascinating. I still don’t comprehend how it is possible for a person to be alive again after severe brain damage. This article proved ho advanced medicine is in our world and that it keeps improving. Madi made a good point by saying that this drug opens up many possibilities for improvements. This drug is a great discovery and can lead to good things in the future.

  6. I thought Madi did a great job choosing her article, A Drug that Wakes the Nearly Dead. Her summary was very concise and factual, and drew me in almost immediately. Her way with words and her easy to read details made me want to know more about the drug just from the first couple of sentences. I also thought that Madi’s statistics were fascinating and that she overall did a fabulous job summarizing her article.
Although Madi’s summary was spot on, I thought there was some area for improvement. The transition from the 1st to 2nd article was sort of rough, which gave me confusing thoughts during the 2nd paragraph. I think if she tried to go off the 1st article with a little more ease and less confusion it would have made the review even better. I also thought that Madi could have voiced her opinion a little more, and what she thought about the drug.
Overall, I thought that this article was absolutely awesome. I didn’t know that there was a drug remotely close to waking the dead, but this article informed me that there is. Madi’s amazing review of this article makes me interested in learning more about the drug and what the future for it is.

  7. Madi has done a wonderful job at presenting this article, A Drug that Wakes the Nearly Dead”, in a short and simple summary. I was impressed by the way Madi clearly presented the details of the article and explained them clearly. I was also impressed by the way she created a summary so detailed in such a simple summary that explained all of the main points. Finally I was impressed by Madi intentionally sorting out all of the important and unimportant facts and using only the important facts that would help the reader understand the topic better.
I enjoyed reading Madi’s summary and thought she did a wonderful job presenting the information. However I believe she could have improved some aspects to create an overall better piece. I believe to improve her summary she could have included more information relating to the medications and the effects they took on the people taking the medications. This would have made the information in the summary make it easier to follow. Another thing that could have made this summary better, she could have improved the transitions between her paragraphs because it would have been easier to switch between topics.
Madi’s article was very intriguing and it was interesting to read about. I learned many things from this article. The most interesting thing I learned from this summary was that a drug could end up bringing someone back to life. A drug could give you more time with a loved one and it could give you that chance to say “goodbye” or “I love you” one last time.
