Opioid Abuse Linked to Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Opioids such as oxycontin, are usually a common and effective treatment for chronic and acute pain. However, recently, non-medical use of prescription opioids has increased drastically and according to the Susbstance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, prescription opioids are the second most frequently used illegal drug in the U.S. New studies led by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found that mood and anxiety disorders are highly associated with non-medical prescription opioid use, such as oxycontin. As the studies have shown, prescription opioids are highly addictive and prolonged use of these opioids can produce neurological changes and physiological dependence. Therefore, many individuals suffering from mood and anxiety disorders such as bipolar, panic disorder, and major depressive disorder are highly likely to abuse opioids. During the researchers studies, they examined the association between individuals with mood and anxiety disorders with non-medical prescription opiod use and opioid disorder.

This new study that opioid abuse could be linked to mood and anxiety disorders, affects humanity and the lives of the future. If the government doesn’t get involved with the abuse of illegal opioids and regulate the amounts people take of opioid drugs, further diseases will emerge and many people may possibly die as a result of this. Especially with the increased use of non-medical prescription drugs, even among adolescents, the association with future psychopathology is in great concern. As Carla Storr, ScD, author of the study and an adjunct professor with the Bloomberg School’s Department of Mental Health says, “ Using opioids, or even withdrawal from opioids, might precipitate anxiety disorders, suggesting that there is a subgroup of people who are vulnerable to future development of anxiety disorders."

I found this article to be very interesting and intriguing even though at times it was confusing. I think that learning about the seriousness of these opioid drugs, that aren’t even mentioned that often, and the effect that they have on people and could have on future lives, is very fascinating. I also found it very interesting that opioids are the second most frequently abused drugs in the U.S. after marijuana because such little is heard about these drugs, and the effect on people is so vital effect that it made this article that much more interesting. Overall, I thought this was a wonderful article, and would love to learn in more depth about why opioids are so addictive.

  1. I think Katie did a good job explaining the detailed, complicated process of why and how opioids are so addictive to people in this article. First of all, the background information of the prescribed use for opiods such as oxycontin was helpful and useful for it described how it worked to suppress pain, which would give the reader better understanding on why it is one of the most illegal prescription drugs taken. Also, the article review was very consistent in the explanation of the different side effects the drug could have on a person depending on if they had a mood or anxiety disorder; which helps the reader understand why a drug like oxycontin could be abused. Finally, the review did a great job explaining on how abusing this drug could affect the future generations; health wise and physiologically.
It was a great article, but it was a little confusing at times when describing the how the drug works to addict individuals. Explanation on the topic might have been useful in the review; and it would have been interesting to read a quote from one of the researchers on the topic to get their point of view on the subject.
Overall, she did a great job explaining this article even though it was a confusing article to originally read. The best part about the article was that it was very interesting and it is relatable in everyday life, for we always hear about the prescription drug abuse that goes on. Now, it is interesting and good to know how these drugs work and to understand why so many people illegally use them.

  2. Overall I think Katie did a wonderful job reviewing her article. I think Katie did a great job summarizing and not making her review wordy. But still, she incorporated all the major details and facts in a clear manner. I think Katie did a great job organizing her summary so that the point of the article, about the addictive drugs, was clearly portrayed. Also, I think Katie did a great job connecting the use of opioids to humanity. Her connection to humanity really helped prove why this discovering is important.
Although I think Katie did a great job with her review, there are some aspects that I think she could have improved on. I think it would have been helpful, and it would’ve added to Katie’s review if she gave more information on the studies themselves, not just what the studies proved. Also, I think it would add to her review if she talked about other opioids, rather than mostly oxycontin.
It is very interesting to me that prescription drugs can cause so much damage to people if they are abused, even if the drugs are not that strong. Overall, Katie did a very good job with her review of this article.

Katie was able to summarize her article in a clear and articulate way that made me understand more about the opioids. I also enjoyed how Katie summarized her article in a quick and easy manner, not making it too wordy. I also thought Katie did an awesome job with the background information on the drug, her statistics, and the different side affects the drug has on people, depending on their condition.
Although Katie did a great job her entire review, there were some spots I thought there could have been improvement. I thought that Katie could have given us a little more information on the addiction side and how it works for addicts. I also thought that if there was a medical researcher’s point of view incorporated into the review, it would have given the readers including myself a professional point of view on how dangerous the drug can really be.
Overall, I thought that the review was well written and organized. I think that Katie did a great job picking a topic, because it is relatable to the stories heard in the news about drug abuse. I learned that there are many circumstances in which abusing drugs occur, even when people don’t even know it’s happening and if the drug isn’t that strong. In conclusion, I really enjoyed reading Katie’s review and that she did a great job.

  4. Katie did a very good job at summarizing her article. She kept it to the point without going into unnecessary detail, and it had a good flow, which made it very easy to read. I also liked how Katie went into a lot of detail about the different studies, where they were preformed, and the statistics of the drug. This helped me to better understand the tests and the affects of the drug. Katie did a very good job at explaining the serious long term affects that this could have on people taking the drug. I think that this was a very hard article to summarize into just a short space, but Katie did a very good job with it.

Although Katie did a very good job with this article summary, I think there were some areas she cold have improved in. I think she could have gone into a little more detail about what the drug actually does to the body that causes these diseases and addiction. Also, I think Katie could have talked more about the tests themselves, and not just the results of the tests.

Overall, Katie did a very good job with her article summary. I find it amazing how even prescription drugs can have such harmful affects. I had no idea that drugs like these could lead to addiction, diseases, or even death.

  5. I think Katie did a great job summarizing this very interesting article. Even tough the article was confusing, her summary perfectly explained the detailed process of why and how opioids are so addictive to people. Firstly, she gave good background information about the medical use opiods and how people are addicted to these drugs. Also by using oxycontin as an example, it made it helpful for me to understand the reasons for this addiction. She explained that it was used to suppress pain, which made it more understandable as to why without a prescription it is illegal. Also, the article summary was well organized and worded. I like that she included statistics and outside information to this review. Finally, her summary included why this could affect future generations and why it is important to prevent this from happening.
At times I found the article confusing, especially when the drugs were described. I think learning how the drug attracts individuals would be interesting to know. Also if quotes by researchers would be included the summary might be a little more interesting. However, overall Katie did a great job. It was a hard article to understand, but she summarized it well. The part were she compared it to our every day life was very fascinating. Also the part about future generations really caught my eye. After reading this summary, I know understand why these drugs should have a medical prescription and why she should stop illegal buyers.

  6. Katie did a great job at summarizing this article, Opioid Abuse Linked to Mood and Anxiety Disorders”. Her summary was great it went straight to the point of the topic. Katie did a good job at giving the details of the summary in consistency chronological events. The information was also presenting the effects this drug could have on the future generations. Katie connected opiods to humanity and this helped to allow the reader to understand the topic more clearly.
I still believe Katie did a good job writing this article summary however she made a few mistakes that could have been improved. I think Katie should have expressed how addicting this drug could really be and the affects of the drug and its addiction. It would have been easier to read the article and summary if the summary gave more detailed explanations of each drug, how it is used and what it is used for.
Throughout the entire summary Katie did a terrific job explaining the difficult task of the opiods and their powerful addiction. I learned that a ton of prescription drugs are abused everyday and people can be addicted without even knowing it because the drug does not feel that strong.

  7. I think that Katie did a good job summarizing the article. It was just long enough for me to have an understanding of the effects of opioid abuse, and she gave many interesting facts about opioids. I also think that Katie did a good job analyzing the article and giving her own opinion. Katie did a good job of clearly explaining the scientific link between opioids and mood and anxiety disorders. This article gave me a better understanding of some of the negative impacts that a drug can have on somebody’s body and mind.
Although the review was well written, I think that she could have given more information on the drug itself, as many people do not know all of the harmful effects of illegal drugs, particularly opioids. Although Katie mentioned that this is a widely used drug, I think that she could have emphasized the magnitude of this problem. She also could have gone into detail about what the government is doing to reduce the use of opioids in the United Stated.
In conclusion, I think that this was a well-developed and informative review of an article aout the effects of opiates. I find it astonishing that somebody can legally receive prescription drugs even though they have so many harmful effects on the body.
