This article, "Pregnancy Linked to Long-term Changes in Mom's Brain" by Laura Sanders explains how a women's brain is altered by pregnancy. This article is broken down by two sections which includes, how the women's brains were tested and the findings in the aftermath of the testing process. In order to test the impact of women's brains as a result of pregnancy, researchers at Leiden University led by Elseline Hoekzema who is a neuroscientist their used "detailed" anatomy scans of 25 women who wanted to get pregnant with their first child. In addition, the scans took place two months after the women gave birth to their child to compare if there were any changes in the women's brain as a result of pregnancy.
The results from the scans revealed that the women's brain does indeed change. Certain regions in the brain had less "grey matter" after pregnancy. The grey matter is what forms your brain to function efficiently. The fact that the grey matter shrinks allows for the new mother to be more responsive to their infant child.
This research benefits society in that we have a better understanding of the changes that women undergo in their brain as a result of pregnancy. Now, we know why women see the world differently after giving birth. Overall, this knowledge illustrates to us why mothers care so much for their children and how women are viewed more as "caring" and "nurturing". An important result in the study to make this point even more clear is that how scans were done on the brains of newborn fathers and how there was no change to their grey matter.
In this article, the main strengths are how this test is simple and straightforward. Moreover, the information from Laura Sanders is presented very clearly. In addition, there are other scientists that offer their perspectives and agree with the findings of the test. The author has written a more valid piece as a result. In contrast, the main weakness is that there are many variables in women's bodies throughout pregnancy and it is hard to infer whether these changes are solely related to pregnancy. Also, the author should build off the findings of the test by having the researchers continue to scan women's brains after other pregnancies and compare the images.

  1. I read a current event by my fellow student Jay Bernstein. In his current event he talks about the article, “Pregnancy Linked to Long-Term Changes in Mom’s Brain.” In his current event he does a very good job of explaining the structure of the article. This is important because it explains to the reader what the article is like so they don't have to read it. This saves time for the reader and makes his summery less dependant on the original article. He also does a good job of simplifying all the facts in the article. This makes his current event shorter which helps the reader digest it faster. This is good because the reader will have the information he needs without having to read more than he needs to. If the reader sees a bigger block of text than necessary he will be less inclined to read it. Another good thing jay did is he brought the male perspective into his current event. If he did not do this the males reading his current event would be less interested because it does not apply to them.
While Jay did many things correctly he did have some weak points in his current event. One of these weak points is that he is a bit redundant when he states some points. This is bad because if you stated a point once you do not need to say it again because your readers will become disinterest. He can fix this by only saying his facts once. Another weakness his current event had is that he had no critiquing paragraph. This is bad because he either forgot to copy it or he didn't critique to original article which leaves out his perspective and gets the reader thinking less. He can fix this by writing a critique paragraph.
This article taught me something that I didn't know. I did not know that woman change mentally after giving birth to children in order to become better caretakers. I chose this current event because the title intrigued me and i wanted to learn more. This changes my life perception because I now know my mom is a different person before she gave birth to me.

I read a current event by Jay Burstein on the article, “Pregnancy Linked to Long-term Changes in Mom’s Brain”. This review had many strong points, but also had a couple of weak points. He broke the article down into an outline, so a reader could easily go through the original article and find specific points. Jay also stated who led the scientific research. This would be helpful to someone who wanted to do more research on the topic. The reader could simply look up the scientist's name and find out more about the study, without going to the original article. The last thing that Jay did well was he told the reader why the results might not be completely accurate. This was helpful because it explained to the readers that there is still more research to be done on this topic, and that there might be more data coming out in the future.
While certain aspects of his review are strong, it still had a few flaws. For example, he should have elaborated on the effects the article had on society. He explains that we gained more information about mothers. However, he did not go into depth on what this research could actually do to society. Another flaw in Jay’s review was that he said other scientists offered their perspectives on the texts, but he discuss what the other scientist’s perspectives were. It would have been interesting to see if the other scientists in the article found any flaws in the research.
It was interesting to learn about how a woman’s brain changes during pregnancy. I found it fascinating that less grey matter was found after the women had given birth. While scrolling through the blog this article caught my eye, because it contained information that I did not even know existed. Overall, the article impacted me because I have a better understanding of my mother.
