“Making Headway in the Movement to Protect the World’s Sharks”

This article is about the decreasing numbers of sharks through fining. This article went to great lengths to portray what the world governments, which are effected by fining, would do to stop it. The US government has begun to crack down on fining by blocking trade routes, searching fishing boats, and other such things. The idea of searching boats for shark fins is a hard one to fulfill. Shark fins can be hidden in very small places so it is very hard to find them through searches. The government has tried to force fisherman to bring sharks that have been caught. All of these things were particularly well presented.
They did happen to talk way too much about fining, and they should have talked more about why the fins were so important and what is so important about them. I get the idea of shark fins be rare and decorative but what other purposes. They talked about the declining numbers and statistics of hammerheads sharks but I think that they should have gone into some more details or they should have showed some numbers and statistics of other sharks.
Before reading this article I had no idea that shark fins were so important. I mean I knew that sharks were often hunted but I didn’t know for what purpose and how drastically the population of sharks has decreased.

  1. Joshua’s article was very well written. He summarized in a way that made me want to read the whole article. I liked how he gave examples of where the shark fins could be hidden, and how the government couldn’t easily stop illegal trade because of this.
He presented the idea that world governments would most likely use fining to prevent the trades, causing the activity of finning to cost more than the fins would create. Additionally, he mentions other ways the US government has tried to prevent finning which I found interesting.
I believe Joshua should have elaborated more on the statistics of the hammerhead sharks and how much the populations have changed because of finning. He mentions that there is an excess of information on the topic, so I think if it was included it would have made his review more solid. Also, he could have explained more about how the government tried to force fishermen to turn in the sharks they caught. Both of these topics seem interesting, and by his review there seemed to be enough information to continue on about them.
I was not aware before reading this article of the severity of finning. Joshua’s review has made me wonder what the consequences to the environment are if the repercussions are so bad.

  2. I think that Josh’s review of the article “Making Headway in the Movement to Protect the World’s Sharks” was very good. I think that Josh did some really great things with this article.
I really liked the way that he summarized the article and appeared to capture all the main facts about the article into one simple summary. This made it easy to understand the concept of what was going on about the fining of sharks, and decreasing number. I also thought that the way Josh simply explained the government’s role in the issue of fining. For instance, one way he says the government is trying to help and crack down on the increasing problem of fining is by blocking trade routes and searching fishing boats. Also, I noticed where Josh talks about the con’s of the article such as, that they didn’t talk enough about why the fins and the process of fining is so important, which really interested me and makes me want to find out the purpose.
Although I thought this article review was very good, there were some things that I saw that could have made this review better. First, I thought it could have been nice if he had talked about what exactly the whole process of fining is, because I feel if he included it, even if it wasn’t in the article it could have made the review more interesting and a little easier to understand the severity that this is causing and why its causing these sharks to die. I also thought the article could have improved by maybe giving a little more information or examples on how the government is involved with trying to help stop the fining and decreasing number of sharks.
After reading this review, just like Josh, I had no idea how serious and important shark fining was since it is never really talked about or seen anywhere. It now makes me want to go and find out more behind this gradually increasing issue.

  3. I believe that Joshua article was really good and covered some good points. He explained his article very clearly and summarized in a way that kept it interesting. This article was a good pick because not many people focus on the dangers a shark could be in, which also makes this even more interesting. I think that this article would keep people wondering more about the decreasing population of sharks and that finning could be a harmful process for sharks.

I think that this article was a really good choice however; I would have liked to read about what finning really is because he didn’t really explain that and it became a little confusing. I also wanted to know how it caused the decrease of the sharks. Even though this article is great, a little more information would have been useful.

I thought that Josh did a really good job with this article. I didn’t know anything about the dangers that sharks could get in which made this really interesting to read about. After reading this article, it made me think about more problematic things that the sharks can go through. This article also made me think about sharks because I never really think about them other than killing innocent people but going through this made me realize about the dangers that they can go through.

  4. I think Josh’s summary on “Making Headway in the Movement to Protect the World’s Sharks” is a very interesting article. Josh had a very good interpretation of this piece he explained in depth how the government was going to do their best to protect the sharks. Josh presented the information on how the government is going to help protect and save the sharks. Josh mentioned the article stated the government was searching boats and over vessels for shark fins because it was illegal to collect shark fins because all the sharks began to disappear because people hunted for sharks. Josh also explained the some aspects as to why people took the fins off of sharks and why they wanted the fins. Josh also explained the details of where people hid the shark’s fins. I particularly liked when Josh mentioned the lack of detail in why the fining process is so important made me interested in what people really want these fins for and how they collect them.
I think the review on “Making Headway in the Movement to Protect the World’s Sharks” could have been made a little better. If Josh had mentioned what fining was earlier in the summary. This way it would have been clear at the beginning of this summary as to what the article was really about. I would have also like Josh to talk more about the importance of hammerhead sharks because they were the only sharks percentages reported in the article. I liked this summary and generally thought only a couple changes could have been made to improve it.
One aspect that specifically impressed me that I was not aware of before read the article and its review is the danger the sharks are in and how many of them have disappeared over the years. The percentage of sharks that seems to continuously diminish. I had no idea how many sharks had been at risk over the people who want their fins as art or for some other purpose.

  5. I thought that Josh’s article was very well thought out and uniquely interesting. He gave the reasons why shark finning was easy to carry out for the small places on which the fins could be placed and the secretive smuggling of them. He made sure that the reader was immediately interested which is important in a summary.
Personally, I have not heard about shark finning and this article marks great resemblance to whale hunting or poaching, another common problem. Therefore, I liked how Josh’s summarization was easy to relate to common problem. It made the reading understandable and easy to follow.
Another reason why this article is interesting is that he does state the uses of shark fins, and why the can hurt the shark population. He states that fins can be used as a decorative items and other accessories, but the rest of the shark excluding the meat goes to waste.
However, one thing I think that could have been done a little better is that he could have added more information on the sharks themselves; such as the population statistics before and after this shark finning period. Another thing that could have been better is that maybe the description of the actual finning could be in a little more in-depth.
The one thing that stood out the most though was the uniqueness of the article. Not much research has been shown about shark finning has been shown, so therefore it is a fresh thought. Shark finning is a new concept to most people and I thought that Josh did a very good job picking an article that most people would have no knowledge about.

  6. Josh did a very good job in his review. His summary brought across the main points, and I liked how it was short and to the point. He helped me understand the problem, and I agreed with him on many of his points. For example, I wish there were more statistics on the sharks to help me see how serious the problem is.
However, I found his review hard to read. He couod have done a little bit of proof reading. I also think that he could have gone into a little bit more detail in explaining fining. Whenever he brought this up, I was a little confused.
I had no idea there was such a serious problem facing sharks. When you hear about endangered animals, you usually do not hear about sharks. Overall, Josh's review was very good, and it helped me understand the problem.

  7. Josh’s summary was written clearly, and had sufficient information. I enjoyed how he specifically discuses what the governments are doing to stop Finning, like searching boats and blocking trade routes. He discusses how, even though the ships are being searched, it is still easy for the fins to be hidden in small spaces. I also liked how Josh pointed out that the article discusses Finning, but never mentions what the fins are used for (other than for decoration). A third thing I enjoyed about the summary was that he discussed the decline in the shark population being significant, and shows the real-world connection for the reader.
Some things I thought could have been improved were that there were no actual statistics given in the summary, although their existence in the original article is reflected upon. I also think that Josh could have given examples on specific things that the government was doing. He discusses that they are making blocks on the trade routes, but does not go into more detail.
One thing I thought was interesting in Josh’s summary was that he talks about the decline in the population of certain sharks. After reading that I feel like I should look up specifically what species of shark is in the most decline and what the population numbers were in the past compared to what they are now.

  8. I like how josh summarized it. He was quick and very into it. He cared which made me care. I loved how he had a lot of information and put it only in a few sentences to make it simple. I liked how josh chose an article worth reading most of the others appealed really boring.
I wish josh was clearer about the whole fining part; I wasn’t really sure what he was trying to get at. I wish he got some solid information. I wish he did back round research, and I would really care what countries were fighting this problem and what company’s were involved, and if fisherman were the only thing causing the sharks population to decrease
Like josh I never realized that sharks were hunted for there fins. I was looking forward to him explaining what the fins were used for maybe for example maybe the skin used for a purse or something. Also I wondered when he would show the statistics. I really liked how josh made this a quick current event.
