Women More Likely Than Men to See Nuance When Making Decisions

This article suggests that men and women view the world differently. New research suggests gender plays a role in categorical decisions because men tend to organize the world into distinct categories whereas women see things as more conditional and in shades of gray. At the University of Warwick, psychologist had 50 men and women judge where certain object was to fit in certain categories. The researchers reported that, “Men were more likely to see an object as fully belonging or not belonging to a category, while women more often judged that objects only partially belonged. The more intriguing finding, though, was that men and women were equally confident about their decisions. This means the gender difference was not due to men simply being more certain or women more uncertain about their judgments. Instead, it suggests men and women perceive the world differently.” These categorical judgments can have an influence on the types of professions people pursue. Which is partly the reason for why many professions are heavily male dominated. Research finds that men engage in more abstract thinking about many topics (using categories, generalizations) while women are more disposed to context-specific thinking (in terms of concrete situations and relationships). This article talks about how the morals of men and women differ.

These findings can help humanity understand the thinking of men and women. In specific, it can help women understand why men think how they do, and it can help men understand why women think how they do.

I thought this article was interesting. It was very well written and easy to read. By including specific tests done on men and women the information in this article can be verified easily. This article gave me a lot of insight on the psychology of men and women, which I think is a very interesting topic.

  1. I think Caroline presented this article very well in her paragraph. This article was a very interesting to read about. Not a lot of studies are done on the topic of the brains when compared to men and women. It was a very unique study on the psychology that goes into these comparisons, and the paragraph helped explain that. The paragraph clearly explained that the differenced in the thoughts of men and women effect today’s society; not necessarily sexist but on how different genders take on challenges and their outlook on life. I also liked how this article can relate to modern times with today’s professions being mostly male dominated and how the brain works can take part in that. It was also very intriguing to read about the different types of studies, such as how men and women perceive the world differently.
However, the details on why and how the morals of men and women are decided on the brain, and not by the actions would have been nice to read about. The reason this article was interesting was because many people think the personality is what makes the decisions in professions and society, not because the brain is worked a different way. Also, the quote from the researcher was nice but it would have been good to add why the researcher said this and why this topic in general is being discussed.
Personally, I was unaware that men and women convince the world differently. I believed that it was the personality that decided how an individuals’ outlook on life would be but this article proved me wrong and taught me many interesting things about the differences of the gender’s brains.

  3. I think that Liz’s review was very well presented. I think the way Liz talked about how men and woman think of the world differently was very well done. It was good because she used the experiment they preformed and described it and then used the information gained from the experiment to make the connection that they see the world differently. I also think that the way that Liz went even further in detail to talk about how this difference in worldview causes some professions to be male dominated because men think differently. I also though that when Liz talked about the kind of thinking men do verses the kind woman do was very well done because it made me see exactly how we think differently and in what fields of thinking.
I think that the review could have been a little better if Liz gave an example of which professions are more male dominated. Also it could have been a little better if Liz explained why it is those certain jobs are male dominated due to the thinking that men have that is different from woman.
The thing in the article that surprised me that I had no idea was that men think of the world in more of categories and in generalizations while girls think in a completely different mind set.

  4. I think that Caroline’s review was well presented. It showed a little bit about how woman think and a little bit about how men think so we could see the contrasting ideas. She was also able to tell us the purpose of the tests in a clear and concise manner that made it easy to understand, and she also showed how these tests and their results will affect us.

I belief that Caroline could have taken out a little bit of the explaining of the tests and more of results that were gathered, and I think that it was a little too wordy. It seemed as though she just copied and pasted rather that summarize.

It was intriguing for me to see a little bit about how woman think and I look forward to hearing more about these tests which I believe could help each gender understand each other better.

  5. I thought that the summary was written very well, and really summed it up well. One thing i happened to enjoy from the article was that it talked about how the different genders think differently. I thought that a lot of people don’t think there is a difference and this article shows that there is. Another thing i enjoyed was that Caroline discussed is that she discussed how the experiment was done. I think if we knew how it was done, there would be less need for the original article ot be read. A third and final thing I liked was that the way men and women percieve he world was shone to be different by this article. I knew that men and women percieved the world a little bit differently but didn’t know it was a significant difference.

One thing i thought could have been improved on was that no statistics were given about differences between men and women when it comes to jobs, and other things. No statistics were given and I think it would have enriched the summary. A second and final thing i thought could have improved the article is that is Caroline could have explained why the researchers quote was said and why it was used. I think that if the reader had some context about it, then we could get a richer experience without actually reading the article.

One thing that caught my eye in this summary was that I knew that men and women thought and acted differently, but i did not know the magnitude of it. I did not know that it was physically different, and that studies would show a significant difference between the two genders.

  6. I think that Caroline did a really nice job on this article, “Women More Likely Than Men to See Nuance When Making Decisions”. There were three particular aspects of this article that I really enjoyed. First, I think that Caroline picked a very interesting topic that I would never have thought to search for or come upon. This topic of how men and women view certain things differently really caught my attention and made me want to read the details about it. I also thought that Caroline did a very nice job on summarizing the article and putting it into simpler terms to understand the general idea. It is easy to see how she there was a lot of unnecessary facts that she had to pick through to prove the points of the article. Another aspect of this article review that I really enjoyed was that she explained how women and men’s brains affect society today; I thought this made the review more interesting. For instance, when she said how this could help women understand why men think how they do and help men understand why women think the way they do. This odd study may be able to help to make improvements in the future.
Although I did believe Caroline did a very nice job, I think there were two things Caroline could have done to make the article review better. First, I think that the article could have been even more intriguing if she had done a little bit of research on the background of the topic and maybe explained why men and women’s brains work differently and the way they do. I also think the article could improve if Caroline explained background on the researchers quote, rather than just state it and support the quote with evidence. I believe this would have made the article even more interesting to read about.
This article really impressed me because I had not know before reading this, that men and women’s brains were really that different in decision making and really made me think. I had never really deeply thought about how many professions are usually male dominated.
